No...it is merely one form of transaction to facilitate the transfer of money within the monetary system...it is not the "system".

Apparently not "the system", that's understood, but disrespectful of the system none the less.

I just skimmed this thread, so sorry if this has already been covered.

I would imagine Best Buy and other authorized resellers can't say no to cash. They also sell the iPad. Now if they don't take it, that would be inhibiting their ability to do business and just cost them a $600+ sale. I'm pretty sure the Apple Store itself has been no cash for good while.

You're pretty wrong. Their "no cash" policy is limited to iPhones / iPads. You can buy accessories and whatnot via cash still, at least as of a little while ago.

Most likely there's a good reason for requiring a credit card. Either way,
on a fixed income, who needs to plink down your hard earned cash on a toy like that?
PAPER, PLASTIC,Retina scan, what does it matter? I'm still broke.

Funny, I can't stand restaurants that demand cash only. One, because its inconvenient for me since I don't carry cash. Two, because there's a 99.99999999999% chance that those places are cheating on their taxes (at least at the places I'm speaking of).

I have an in-law who's married to a restaurant owner. They "claim" low enough wages to get medic-aid and other government assistance. Nevermind the fact that they drive BMW's, own a $200K+ house, etc. Anywho... sorry for the derail. Everyone please continue their apple bashing :p

I didn't read through the entire thread, but don't they have to accept legal tender? I mean, I have heard of minimum charges etc. but if you have CASH in hand? WTF?

    From Wiki:
Legal tender or forced tender is an offered payment that, by law, cannot be refused in settlement of a debt, and have the debt remain in force. Currency is the most common form of legal tender.
    For Sale 2019:
    Tortuga Audio LDR passive preamp

The key word in what you found on wiki is DEBT. A purchase of goods is not a settlement of a debt. Also the courts have also held that not all currency must be accepted to settle a debt. For instance people have tried to make large payments with things like a truckload of loose pennies. The courts have ruled that the debtor could have easily paid in other currency and the payment of pennies and/or coins was vindictive and onerous and refusal by the holder of the debt to accept payment in that form did not void the debt.

It's disgusting. The first thought was to whine to the media rather than solve her own individual problem. Waddle your **** to a bank and get a FREE debit card (aka gift card) and buy your iPad if you must or do the most powerful thing of all -- don't buy one at all and/or buy from a competitor.

The media should not be leaning on businesses in this way. Talk about overstepping their bounds. What if this was your business? You probably wouldn't think its so cute.

Aside from this woman and maybe a handful of others, the people who had a problem with this policy were not prospective buyers of this device in the first place.

Uh, she did handle the problem. Apple exercised their right to omit cash payments, and she exercised her right to call the press. You think a private letter from her to Steve Jobs would even make it to his desk?

It's obvious you haven't read anything about what transpired:

Apple wouldn't take pre-paid credit (a.k.a gift cards either). I am like this lady, I prefer to save my $$ and purchase outright what I want. That is the way we purchased my wifes Infinity.

The people poking fun at her due to her fixed income should learn the lesson: If more people did what she did, that is save money for what you want then simply using a CC with no regard for the consequences, we wouldn't be in the financial mess we are in. Here we have someone that is fiscally responsible and she is being made fun of. That shows some real lack of class.

Apple has a right to do what they do, the Media has a right to report on it. I don't see the big deal with this.

I prefer to pay for my purchases in cash. I hate using my Credit Cards. I am not paying the fees associated with Pre-Paid cards. My vendors I work to get terms.

I have read much about what transpired, but I guess I missed they wouldn't take pre-paid cards. The point I'm making still stands -- get a debit card then or don't buy the product. Very simple. No whining to the media required.

She isn't entitled to an iPad.

Good for you. I purchase outright what I want too, but I take advantage of all the cash back rewards from credit cards and I pay no penalties or interest. What does any of that have to do with this story?

I'm not sure who you're directing that at, but speaking for myself I am hardly making fun of her for how she chooses to make purchases.

I do find it pathetic that she couldn't figure this out without whining to the media to make a big stink about something that nobody else seemed to have a problem figuring out.

Are you ignorant about how credit cards work, or do you truly believe that anyone who uses a credit card does so with "no regard for the consequences?" While you're using cash I'm coming out hundreds of dollars ahead each year by using credit cards. I'm not knocking using cash for everything, because that's a fine choice, but don't assume anyone using credit cards can't handle it.

I agree completely. On every step of this story... who cares? No laws were broken. Fact of the matter is Apple has probably made BILLIONS thanks in no small part to incessant and sometimes biased in their favor media coverage. They cannot accept the windfall from such coverage without expecting to take some backlash for when someone doesn't like something about Apple and the media takes off with that as well.

Furthermore, even though Apple changed their policy, they suffer no ill effects. Buyers still must register with them so they still get all the tracking info they want. Now they also get a fluff piece about how much they care about customers and crap by changing the policy and giving the lady a free piece of overpriced junk. Everyone's a winner, the woman, Apple, and the media for sensationalizing it like they do everything else.

Disgusting? That's as overboard as the people expecting Apple to automatically accept cash.

I am a cashless purchaser. If a company doesn't take debit/credit cards, I usually don't have any way to purchase anything there as I just don't carry cash anymore. That being said, there are still a few smaller businesses that are cash only. I respect their decision to not accept plastic and take on the associated transaction charges, but I also won't shop there as I have to remember to go out of the way to go to the ATM prior to shopping there.

If you don't like something, vote with your dollars. If there really were that many people that disdained Apple's no cash policy to the point they didn't shop there, I'd bet Apple would take the hint and start taking cash as sales subsided. Obviously that's not going to happen, as I think we ARE moving more rapidly towards a non-cash society, and most people don't mind not using cash.

Interesting how many people get riled up over an absolutely unimportant topic...

As much as you can respect someone that wanted to pay cash for an iPad and was summarily shoo'd away from the store. These people shouldn't be marginalized. They should be turned into paying customers.

Exactly! What problem? This was an individual issue with a single woman. Because of her whining and not solving her own problem it became a story that was pasted all over the internet, including here at Club Polk.

Individual non-issue becomes national non-issue that makes it to the news headlines. That is pathetic.

I guess I don't get what her paying with cash has to do with her responsibility. It would be like me asking what a woman on a fixed income is doing buying an iPad. It's irrelevant.

You don't think that your comments read that using cash is inherently responsible and using credit cards is inherently irresponsible?

That's how I took it and neither is true. Both can be used responsibly or irresponsibly.

There is no right answer. Do what works for you.
    jinjuku wrote: »

I actually agree with you. The fact that many people don't know how to use credit and its a big reason for the problems we have. I could go on, but again this doesn't relate in any way to the story.
    jinjuku wrote: »

That's a problem for Apple and their shareholders. You'll notice I haven't indicated that this was a good thing. They only limit themselves by having such a policy (as I said in my first post), which should have made the Apple bashers wet their pants.

Going to the media and whining is clearly effective, but excuse me for believing that this isn't news. I don't think it's the business of the media to make how a company accepts payments for it's products/services a news story.

This made it to the news section of the San Francisco Gate by way of a single woman's inability to solver her own problem which is the only reason it went national.

Sounds like there is a solution, but hey...by any means necessary, right? (for those of you who miss the point)

Kudos to Apple for trying to stop money laundering. Good luck on enforcing it at the end of the day though.

Kudos to her for trying. She obviously has a bank account if she receives cheques, so I'm guessing she has a debit card. Nice try, but no go.

Lastly, what's to stop me from using forged credit cards to buy Apple products and then selling them? Nothing. What is illegal about buying an ipad and then selling it personally for cash? Nothing. The paper trail is gone and I've done nothing wrong. There are obvious workarounds.

Sure, and the media has their own shareholders. You personally don't believe this story is newsworthy, however, as you said its plastered everywhere and obviously lots of people are talking about it. Whether the story may fit your idealistic image of what the media should cover has nothing to do with whether a story the media sensationalizes will take off or not. Condemn our society for eating this stuff up, however, everyone involved in this story has acted in a completely capitalistic way and are probably all benefiting from it.

I guess I'm just a little confused on exactly who you are pissed at and why.
