If you can get the CSi A6 one day I'd highly recommend it. Its a very capable center channel.

I'm sure I will eventually - the CS20 looks to be one step below it, but thus far it's done an admirable job.

I'm thinking the next upgrade will be the surrounds. Is there any downside to using Audio Monitor 50s as surrounds? Those FXi A6s look pretty crazy ..though it'd be nice if they came in cherry as well.

The Monitor 50's will work fine as surrounds. The one downside is that they won't timbre match your mains...but timbre matching surrounds with your mains isn't nearly as important as timbre matching your center with your mains.

I'm using the fxi3's right now. I'm a fan of dipole surrounds, though some people don't like them. They aren't as directional as monopole surrounds, but they have a much fuller ambient sound.

I had the FXi30's for a while at my old place, they were a nice speaker. At our new place we had my cherry RTi28's as surrounds for a while, but ended up installing RCi80's in the ceiling (~$100 new at Amazon for the pair). Much cleaner look, very happy with them!

Was thinking of installing the second pair of RCi80s to expand to 7.1 surround, but decided to bi-amp the front L+R instead. Very happy with that decision!

Yes, I can relate with the 70's. The A7's weigh a bit more, so will cross that bridge this weekend.

I'm considering buying these speaker outriggers to help make the leveling process be simpler, and just avoid the factory spikes altogether. I hope to decide between cones or regular spikes and get these ordered next week. The below pic from the Soundocity website is an example of just one style of their many outriggers:

I like!! So, I would just remove the feet from the A7s and stick these on eh? Hmmmm :)

Please explain - as I've always read about 'voice matching' centers w/ fronts, etc. But, I've never quite understood the exact quality that's being compared. Does it have to do w/ the similar kinds of drivers (materials, etc.) that each polk line uses? ie. Probably my system is a bit frankenstein right now w/ RTi fronts, TSi center, Monitor surrounds.

Yep! It's a pain to lay on the floor with a small wrench to try and adjust the factory spikes. I had envisioned a product just like these outriggers in my head, then stumbled across another thread here that had the link to this product.

Here's a good example - when demo'ing the A7s at Frys, I also listened to an CSi A6 which blended perfectly together. In addition, I also tried out a Martin Logan center ($1800 IIRC) that was quite impressive, very detailed compared to the Polk. But when you flipped back and forth between these two centers, the ML just did not sound well with the A7s still playing the L+R channels.

So I'm a firm believer in timbre-matched front speakers...

Makes sense :) Perhaps I'll switch from 2 ch stereo mode to 7ch or PLII for a bit and listen to the CS20 and see how it matches. For 5.1 material (been going through my box set of 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1) the CS20 seems to have blended well w/ the A7s, so at least I'm not sensing any overt differences.

Yup. The whole point of timbre matching is to create a seamless sound-stage between your speakers. A properly calibrated, timbre matched system will acoustically make the speakers disappear...ie you won't be able to localize the audio coming from each speaker.

Even more so if you darken the room enough so that you can't even see the speakers... ;)

Side note - my "name your price" offer (promo ended 7/7/10) at 6ave was just accepted for a black CSi A6 for $299. Wonder if I can call in and see if they will honor that price for a cherry one instead... :o

FYI, for those of you on the fence deciding between the black or cherry finish, the cherry finish is absolutely gorgeous. A deeper finish than my previous cherry RTi70's, which I hope to show a comparison pic in the next day or so...
Well, was able to take some comparison pix before packing up the 70s for shipping. The pic below is of the main video system with one of each speaker shown. For a bunch more comparison pix, please click here for my online Picasa album.

Though the pictures show a difference between the cherry finishes, it's even more noticeable in person.

Right now the A7s are just playing the radio on low-ish volume, just to start breaking them in. Sometime next week I'll run Audyssey and use my SPL meter to dial them in better.

So far the A7s do seem more bright than the 70s, but the background radio can hardly count as critical listening. I'm looking forward to seeing how they perform with some good DTS MA soundtracks near reference level... :)

One thing I do not like about the A7s are the speaker grille - well, the attachment to the speaker. The pegs fit in extremely tight, so much so that I'm quite nervous about breaking a peg off when removing the grille. The 70s grilles were much easier to remove, but still fit plenty snug. I wish Polk had upgraded their attachment method to the hidden magnets style.

Also, be careful when removing the binding posts to access the brass jumper! I don't know how I did this, but one of the banana plug caps popped off, fell downwards, hit the power port cone, and went sideways into the rear port. That power port cone is not that big, so I'm amazed about what happened. I couldn't have done that if I was trying - oh well...:o

Good eye - yes! Triple 20 in cherry/black. I used to have the aluminum (silver) rails, but swapped to black to make the rack stand out less in low lighting.

The rack also has the extended rear metal panels, perf metal sides, and a media drawer (behind right door @ bottom) for storing remotes, empty movie cases, etc. The drawer is chock full of remotes since I run everything with the Harmony 1100. I left the door off the center bay so I can see the volume level on the amp, plus it helps ventilation for the warm-running Onkyo.

And before anyone asks, those speaker wires did get hooked up to the speakers!

^^ Thanks! It's been fun to assemble/upgrade over the years...and I'm currently using the grilles on the A7's.

Obviously I run all cables to the TV in the wall which keeps it looking clean. I'm using two PowerBridges - one for TV power, another for backlighting power that's switched from the receiver. HDMI cables are run in continuous lengths from receiver to TV via wall scoops (Monoprice).

For the wiring within the rack, I use the 3M command strips and various-sized clips to keep those organized. I also bundle up the runs with twist-ties/velcro/etc so they are not any longer than they need to be.

The below pic is of the wall before mounting the Pioneer in June of 2009:

    100_6696.JPG

Left side shows the HDMI cables ready, middle section is power, and the right side shows now-unused HDMI and component video wall plates, with short runs of cable still inside the wall. As you can see from the mess this was still a work in progress, but I like to take pix along the way for an occasion such as this! ;)

Plus, the Oppo 980 DVD player on the left middle shelf and the Pioneer 51 BD player on the right middle shelf have since been replaced with the Oppo 83 earlier this year. Plus the RTi70's in the picture here were just replaced with the A7s shown in my earlier post...dang upgrade bug!

Niice! Yeah one of my cousins just had his living room remodeled recently - 5 RCI 80s in the living room ceiling, 2 more in the kitchen ceiling, and a PS-125 sub. He had all the wiring and a/v face plates installed as well - that definitely saves on some of the cables. Alas, I'm in an apartment so that kind of modification will have to wait until I buy a house (some daaaay lol).

Did you set up all the in-wall wiring yourself?

Small world - we have RCi80's for the surrounds in this main basement media room, and another pair waiting to be installed in the family room (much more involved installation, along with outdoor speakers for the deck). Bought the RCi80's from Amazon some time ago for $99/pair...cheaper than the RCi60's at the time. :)

I did most of the wiring myself, with a bit of help from my father w/ the wall mount, and a friend helped me install the RCi80s. I understand being limited to in-wall projects when renting, so hopefully you'll get that house (or condo) soon!

Well, I finally got the outriggers and installed them recently, and just now getting around to uploading pix. I went with the "economical" style point as I personally wasn't crazy about the looks of the larger cone type.

FYI, you can leave the stock feet on the A7's, which is what I did, and bolt the outriggers to the threaded holes in the stock feet. But you could remove the stock feet all together and screw the outriggers into the factory threaded inserts in the cabinet itself, if that's your choice.

Outriggers attached to bottom of speaker:

    Full view of system:
    100_9611.JPG

All in all, I'm quite happy with the outriggers and their simple but effective design. I did have a problem with the initial order in that the threaded spikes would not screw into the outrigger's holes, but an email to Soundocity was promptly answered and a new set sent out immediately, even before I sent the other ones back. Thanks, the outriggers were a good purchase. Now just have to make sure to store the factory spikes safely so I don't lose 'em, in case I sell the A7s down the road for yet another upgrade! :o

The setup has been fun to build/upgrade over the years. Next stop: MFW-15 Turbo kit! :D

Here is ours, an RIP123 (oops, I mean AV123 ;)) MFW-15 in cherry diamond finish:

MFW-15 size compared to the Polk microPro 1000 it replaced, pic taken about a month ago:

    100_8650.JPG

The MFW-15 is located just behind and to the right of the couch, so that's why it's not showing up in the pix of the main view. I also found that by facing the sub towards the back of the room (and not to the left) helped to tame the slightly increased bass notes when seated close to the side walls. This sub location was one of the two best ones I found when doing the sub crawl test...

^^ We enjoy it, though not often enough if you ask me! ;) Always great to have some friends over for dinner/drinks/etc., then head downstairs for a movie or two. Even better if they're first-timers to our humble media room...

We're hosting another couple tomorrow night for M&C:TFSOTW, and I'm the only one of us that has seen it. So it'll be fun to see their reaction when the first battle begins with near-reference volume levels  :D. This is one of the most impressive audio demos on the system...

Oh, the idea is there - believe me! But until we majorly renovate the family room on the main level to fit the 60" Pioneer, it's staying downstairs...

Any progress at all on your cherry A7s? I see Polk has a few black ones over at their ebay auctions...
