Anyplace where I can't see artificial light at night and the stars look so close you think you can reach up and touch them.

Ditto ... I grew up in a much smaller town & I could go out in the back yard & see the stars go on forever....I love Austin but can't see the stars very well

Fishing/ camping with my dog enjoying some cold brews

Listening to live music & I do not get out enough lately -- the home tunes are good also but I prefer live

The most intense starscape i have ever seen was in the Eastern Sierra Nevada's near Bishop CA. Being in the rain shadow of the rockies blocked moisture...no nearby cities of any size.. Gorgeous.
Then we went to the BristleCone Pine Forest National Park up at 9000+ feet elevation.
I was blown away. Next time, i bring my telescope.

I remember when I was a boyscout way back when camping out in the Poconos, there were soooo many stars visible in that blackness that it was mind boggling beautiful.

They why do you go to like every single gathering of any kind for the forum?

I'll bet we could have a gathering to trim and braid hearingimpared's butt hairs and only tell Al and you'd still show up.

I think the greatest star viewing I ever had was at Crater Lake, Oregon. Just... amazing stuff.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Star viewing, 30 miles off the coast of NJ. Far enough over the horizon that Atlantic City is a dim glow. You've never seen so many stars! That and sailing in the middle of the Pacific Missile Range Facility's test zone in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Not a soul around for hundreds of miles in any direction. Nearest land is 450 nautical miles and it's inhabited by indigenous people. There are so many stars that even on a moonless night you can read a news paper.

The best place to star gaze for me was sitting on the beach at Kwaj, staring up at the very distinctive dust cloud of the outer spiral arm of the Milky Way that we occupy. Your mind kinda wanders back to all those sci-fi books you read as a kid and they start becoming more real. Guess it helps the whole sci-fi aspect when your purpose there is to launch test drones in to space so the targeting system can track them and get hard test data.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Been vacationing there pert near every year since I was a kid in '65. There's no place on earth that does for me what this place does. The moment I set foot there, I unwind and begin to be wonderfully refreshed. Almost lived there, still might some day. Love the place!
