Software for testing speakers?

Afternoon all :)

Please forgive me if this is one of those topics that has been covered numerous times. :o

Is there software that you can use to test speakers for a fault? Something that'd play various frequencies so you can hear if one of the speakers is gone?

I have RTi A9's - and every-now and then I hear a crackle - usually when people are speaking on what-ever is playing... I'd like to narrow it down to the source being the problem, and not the actual speaker - but that's proving to be difficult.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

If they have warranty you can get the tweets replaced.
You should tell us a bit more of what your doing when you hear the crackle...
software isn't going to necessarily tell you when it crackles.
I mean it could just be a bad broadcast or maybe too much information to the tweeter?

Just watching TV e.g. the National Geo Wild channel - and some guy is talking about animals... every now and then I hear a crackle... I'm not sure if its the actual broadcast or the speaker though.

Everything goes through my media center to the AV Receiver to the speakers, so I'm not to sure how to reproduce it constantly.

I've never played the speakers overly loud - I actually have the Receiver set to a maxiumi volume of -10db

Do you have cable or satellite?
Have you tried it with like audio cds...or is it just watching tv?
Is it once in a blue moon... like once this week, two weeks later it happened...for a second...or is it constant...
Stuff like that helps out a lot in figuring out where you went wrong...or what is causing it to happen.

... can't hear it during music... only TV - its satellite, but not HD, just 480p standard TV over satellite.

I'll see if I can find an book reading audio CD - and see if I can hear it. Its fairly constant while watching TV.

You usually hear it at the peak of someone's voice when they're talking.... I'm going to try and reroute the satellite TV directly through the amp instead of through the media center and see if it still does it.

If it doesnt do it with music cd's or audio books, I say that eliminates the a9s. its upstream from there. I like your idea of bypassing the media center. I'd bet a weeks worth of donuts its in the satellite system/wiring connections, etc..
    good luck to you..

    Yeah. Id have to agree.
Try it the way you though.
Your amp may actually clean it up...depending on how nice it.
Keep us posted if it does go away.
Another thing....when you hear he crackling how loud is the volume...?
Is it all the time no matter what the volume....or is there a volume that it only does the sound at?

Hmmm - never really tried different volumes - I think its fairly constant throughout the volume range that I use for general TV.

Next time I have recording and pic it up - I'll try a softer volume and see if its consistent.
