    Some great suggestions in here.

How about Saving Private Ryan? Seems to be getting some really good reviews and no need to skip around - starts you out right in the thick of things. Not to mention it's on sale this week.

    I thought he said "kid-friendly"...

My kid is very young but she sure isn't watching half (or most) of these movies. She (and I) will be up all night.

Monster's Inc one blu ray has one of the best and most active surround mixes I've heard, and the sub action is awesome. I actually think that my next favorite pixar movie for surround is A Bug's Life blu ray. The ambience and small sounds from trees, wind, bugs, etc, is pretty constant and very convincing. It also has several good lfe scenes. I also just watch Toy Story 2 on blu ray for the first time with my daughter, and the opening scene with the Buzz lightyear video game is awesome. Rumbling lfe, sounds coming from all around, and of course the rest of the movie like all pixars is top-notch as well.

As for non kid-friendly, well there are tons of great suggestions already...

    Peace,
    Paul

I always use the scene in Live Free Or Die Hard when the bad guys come to kill the hacker. The bass and surround effects of the bullets are awesome.

I am going to go a little bit older.. The Matrix ( 1st one) actually has some good sound and effects. Especially when the bullets are flying all over the place in the lobby...

Predator-- characters slogging through the woods... weapon fire...

Remastered Alien/aliens--a lot of sound effects from the creatures, the Nostromo, weapons...

With M&C it's not just the battle effects, it's also the convincing ambient sounds of the ocean, the creaking of the ship and so on. Awesome sound...

I know this is an old thread but I am surprised no-one mentioned the new "King Kong." Just about every scene shows off the surround sound, some much more than others.

I'm going to give more recommendations to the new King Kong. That really gave stuff a work out. So did the new Godzilla. Both have very well done sound effects and surround effects.

Master and Commander was also very well done.

For cannon fire though, especially the traveling sound, Gettysburg. When those Confederate cannons open up and it just travels down the line...yeah, surrounds and subs get a work out!

Also, Lord of the Rings. But not for sound effects so much although there are good sequences with good sound. Not just battle scenes either. Rushing wind and water and the Ent scenes have good surround sound effects as well. Subtle but they are there. What you should listen to is the music in LOTR. It's a 5.1 channel music track and you don't even notice it because it's enveloping. But I have a disc with the symphony from LOTR written by Howard Shore for the movie being performed by an orchestra and choir and it's very impressive when you take the movie out of it and just listen to the music.

Any of the Pixar movies have outstanding surround sound--The Incredibles is my fav.

RE: Kung Fu Hustle - EXCELLENT movie w/outstanding sound.

The House of Flying Daggers has the absolute best all-around surround I've heard; the scene with the blind woman & all the drums surrounding her is ASTOUNDING~

The opening ten minutes or so of Disney's Bolt has excellent sound. Also if you can get through the rest of the movie New Moon the werewolf fight and vampire fight in Italy are pretty good.
