Guys,
I bought an inexpensive DVDV/A player by panni to see if I liked 5.1 audio. Invested in a couple of dics. Well I do like this format so now I want to upgrade and send the one I got back to Crutchfield before my 30 days is up, I would like to hear some opinions/suggestions for a new player. Budget will be around 750.00 and want one that will play both SACD and DVD-A and will use as my primary DVD-V player, so needs to be progessive but most are now anyways.
If you are recommending a player any reasons why will help since I am not that familiar with the 5.1 audio format.

Onkyo just came out sith the DV-SP800, it's got progressive, DVD-A, and SACD, It's currently their flagship DVD player and will be right about the top of your budget.
There are many other great brands to Look into (though I'm not as familiar with their models) such as Denon and Harmon Kardon. For $750 you should be able to get a really nice player, So research quite a bit and you'll come out on top. -
Denon DVD-2900. SACD, DVD-A, progressive scan Silicon Images decoding engine (the best out there IMO), no chroma bug, Burr Brown DACs, bass management. I love mine so far. Paid $900 for it, though - a bit over your budget.

I've been looking at the Yamaha DVDS2300. It's out of your budget too. $999

I like my DV47Ai pioneer elite so far. Pretty good for $700 on line. I hear the DV45Ai for $500 is a good deal too.

Another vote for the Pioneer Elite! I have a DV-47A and love it!
-
Have been considering the Denon, saw the Pioneer dv 47Ai at a site called Reliable Audio for 640.00 delivered, also saw where Pioneer is going to offering a low cost player that does both formats. Specs show the Denon as a little better that the Onk. Denon is 999.00 on the sites I saw, care giving up where you got it for less?
Decisions decisions.........................
Any feedback as to how any of these do with the "rental" discs? Had a Pioneer Elite Dv-05 for just a bit but it froze up and pixalated alot with rentals, so it had to go, so much for e-bay buys which is where I got it. -

reeltrouble1,
if your looking for a cheap player thats still really good then look no further then the Pioneer Elite dv45a.It's a hell of a player for not a hell of alot of money. It's a do all player....
It's not nearly as good as the Pioneer Elite dv47a or i,which is what I own.If you can swing the extra cash, the Denon 2900 or the Pioneer 47 is the way to go.Dan

Mantis,
Not really looking for a player on the cheap, want something I can be happy with for a while that can be my primary player, the panni for 150.00 is an ok player, but not videophile by any means, it seems to do well with DVD-A has bass management but since its the first one I have owned do not have anything to compare to. My little town does not have a single audio/videophile type store, just a CC. Have to go 60-70 miles north or south for that. That pioneer Dv-05 I had for a bit would whip the panni hands down as far as chrominance even though it was not a de-interlacer. The 47Ai is in the running along with the Denon. Just need to make the trip to hear them. -
Man,
sounds like your in the middle of nowhere......thats alot of driving to demo gear.If I where you I would make it a day to demo so you don't have to keep the journey going and going.
You can't go wrong with either player. There both nice.Dan

I just got a Pioneer Elite DV 47Ai side by side with my old DVD- Audio player JVC XV-FA90BK, and old SACD player SONY DVP-NC650V no contest. The Pioneer is on another level. $713.00 shipped from 50topsellers.comJmasterJ Polk to the Death

Well the Panni got boxed up today to be sent back to Crutchfield. This was the F85 five disc chager. Plays most discs including DVD-Audio. I never did warm up to this player. I could never get it to play a DVD-A in Dolby Digital, just Pro Logic, yet my JVC player had no trouble converting Fleetwood Mac's Rumours to DD. The panni did sound nice in multi-channel, especially after I added the Monster 950i inerconnects to the 5.1 multi channel. The other thing about the player that was nice was the fact it would play up to five discs. Picture quality on the DVD-V was OK, but the dreaded chromo bug did appear and it had a tough time with Apocalype Now Redux.
So back it goes. But soon to be replaced by the Pioneer 47Ai I ordered today.
Cant wait until it gets here, until then its me and the JVC and DD for audio mixes 9in 5.1. -
Good move reeltrouble1. You can blame me personally if you do not like it!

SACD will be the other gain here.

Dan,
I did listen to DVD-A through the multichannel, I just wanted to mention that for some reason this player would not convert to
DD for those thinking about a player on the cheap.
Anyway its outa here, and waiting for the rack and the Pioneer is KILLING ME.
But my toys are getting better.
Frank Z,
Thanks man you have no idea how old I really am.:p
Madmax,
Hehehe I wont be blaming you, maybe blessing ya, came down to either the Pioneer or the Denon both are good. I procrastanted alot but in the end went with the 47Ai. -
Hey You Guys,
Just to keep the record straight the JVC played good untill about a month ago. brought it 1/08/02 and it was my DVD Audio- and progressive scan player until it started playing one disc then it would lock up. Not open, not play another disc nothing. I had to uplug, and replug it just it to get the disc out. Took it to Best Buy for repair the 47Ai was already in the house. Anyway Best Buy said I needed a logic board. $200.00 plus about $140.00 for labor to put it in. A new JVC cost $199.00. ok so never mind. Haven't even gone back to pick up the JVC yet. NOTE: If I had got a extended warr. Best Buy would have replaced the unit with a new one. Everything else I brought at / or about the same time is playing fine NEVER EVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS OUT OF MY SONY GEAR. Sorry just the facts ! The Receiver, and DVD-SACD PLAYER have been flawless. The player in the bedroom, and in the living room. So I guess I have to wait to get the Phillips DV963 SA I've been wanting. Truth be told the progressive scan picture, and DVD-Audio on the JVC was good. Had it not had problems I would not have replaced it. However, when you upgrade you do find out what you never knew you were missing. :cool:JmasterJ Polk to the Death -
I bought the panni cp72 four months ago. And while this player was inexpensive $120 after rebate at Circuit City it had the best picture of all the DVD players I auditioned. It Plays DVD-A and has the Faroudja Chip in it. I was a happy camper up until last week when the thing just died on me. Of course Labor warranty is expired and I'm looking at cost of over $100 to fix. Lesson learned, cheap is not always better. Of course I did get four wonderful months:rolleyes:
-
Well me and panni are done its outta here while I can still get the purchase price back from Crutchfield, for now my JVC is still playing well, but the display panel has gone dark, just an omen of things to come. As far as me and Sony well I spoke to it already, we are permanently divorced:p . I cant believe we have throw away dvd players but really thats is the case with these cheap ones.
Anyway, the Pioneer is on its way, UPS has it moving south, BTW nice to see ya jmaster, another guy form georgia!
Cant wait to get it hooked up and get to hear DSOTM in 5.1. -
Just a quick note here. I got my DV47Ai because I was interested in DVD Audio and SACD. To date I have not hooked up any video but from what I have heard it is awesome. (more so than most other DVD video units out there). The Audio is very nice and well worth the price. I guess it is about time to enjoy the video benifits as well!

Hey Mad,
I'm with Mantis on this one. My 47Ai is my designated DVD player,
I enjoy movies on it. The progressive scan picture on my Mits HD TV is candy. Now when I get the Phillips DVD 963SA it will be for music. You have the machine might as well watch something.JmasterJ Polk to the Death
