Actually the speeds in Berkley are slow compared to many internet connections :)

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Yeah, I'm convinced that gizmodo article is not well researched compared to what some countries in Europe and Japan have to offer the average customer, not just the lucky few, and where such things are commonplace, not such a rarity that they are worthy as the subject matter for an article like that one. Sometimes, rural service availability in other countries makes the service we can have in major cities look totally inadequate.

The worst of it all is that, in many cases, they even pay LESS than we do for our basic and outdated service, and they can access more features for free (such as DVR recording, telephone calls to 75 countries included for no charge, etc.). The service we get here from the cable companies and phone companies is absolutely dismal by comparison, especially when you consider how much extra we have to pay to get faster service and advanced features.

"Awesome" is certainly not the word that comes to mind.

The original piece is actually from Ars Technica.

was this article written 20 years ago? 18Mbps and is the fastest in the world? The US really lags behind in internet speed and everyone knows that.

Not only is Berkeley a university town like the articles state, UC Berkeley is a huge university with a student population of over 35,000 students. So it really drags the average speed up from whatever the regular Joe can get. So if we could all go enroll in our local college, and live in a dorm...

Come on guys, they're talking about the average speed for the entire city. That means what each joe schmoe gets, not just one person.

Those foreign countries have faster internet, but not when you divide it up on a per-person basis in each of those towns.

Internet is fastest where they've put in the newest infrastructure. We're still pushing a lot of average joe internet over copper wires on telephone poles. Major research universities put a lot of funding into rewiring their entire campus, students, faculty, and each staff person. So all this survey does is show you where a lot of new infrastructure went up.

Cheddar is right we just rewired a lot of buildings where I work..last year that was. The on campus connection is faster than anything I could get for my home!
