Do you follow hockey?

The race for the Stanley Cup began last night! The NHL just finished 6 months of regular season hockey in order to eliminate 14 of its 30 teams from the playoffs. The 2 month long, 16 team tournament kicked off last night. I caught some of the action on the USA Network, NBC Sports Network, and the Hockey Channel.

Hockey just may have a longer season than even the PGA (come to think of it, no, that's impossible!). After Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup last year, Sidney Crosby with Team Canada won the World Cup of Hockey last Summer. Then the 2016-2017 preseason began followed by the 6 month long regular season. Now 16 teams remain. Playoff action is very fast and furious.

If it has been a while since you watched hockey, this is a great time of the year to get reacquainted. I'm a Blackhawks fan and remember watching the hawks back in the early 70s on low definition, tube TVs. If there ever was a sport that needed wide screen, hi def TV it is hockey. The ambient sounds of hockey also benefit tremendously from stereo and surround speakers. These sounds include pucks clanging off the crossbars, and players getting driven into boards.

    I live, eat, breathe hockey and the playoffs is my favorite time of the year.

    Chicago, like the last 6 years, will make yet another good run at the cup. Fortunately for them, they arent plagued with injuries like some other teams. I don't think Nash will present much of a challenge for them but then again, this is playoff hockey...

    St. Louis Blues fan here.
    The Blues beat the Wild in OT last night.
    Good game, but per usual Blues performance, leading 1-0 with just 30 seconds left in the game, the Wild get the puck. I told my sons, "Crud, they're gong to score".
    22 seconds left in the game: the Wild tie it up. :'(

    Blue won it in OT, but Wild fans: don't get discouraged if your team gets a penalty and is playing short-handed against the Blues. You should hope to get the Blues into a situation where they have a power play. That's 2 minutes where you not only don't have to worry about the Blues scoring, but your chances of scoring a short-handed goal go through the roof !

    I don't know how Backes played for St Louis (didn't watch many of their games games) and don't know if you were happy to see him leave. All i can say is, he doesn't put up huge numbers but i really like his presence on the ice. He is a BIG body and loves to throw his weight around. As of late, he's the only one i see finishing a check.

    I'm surprised St Louis is doing so well after losing their Captain and then Shattenkirk. Maybe they were dispensable players...

    One of the more amazing, 25 year runs in all of sports ended this year when the Redwings missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

    Even though they missed the playoffs, they were still very competitive and fun to watch, I caught several of their games this year. The same can be said for the LA Kings.

    With all the potential for injuries each and every game in hockey, what the Wings did is simply amazing. Great players and a great organization. Good teams and organizations must deal with the injuries and have plenty of young players waiting in the Wings.

    As long as the hockey season is, I am always amazed how the teams that make the playoffs can still find another gear of intensity and step things up.

    You're telling me!...Even more amazing is how the sport has cleaned up since Hull and Orr played...There are still moments,but hockey as a whole seems not to be the free for all like it once was...in the NHL anyway!!...

    Hockey has been "cleaned up" in a certain way. But there's a bit more "cheap shots" that occur now and that the linesmen don't catch. Back in the day, the players helped regulate things pretty well. Refs aren't calling things ? Okay, send out Tony Twist and everybody starts playing fair

    From 1965 to 1974, I watched the NCAA basketball tournament every year and watched over 70 percent of UCLA Bruins games during the era of John Wooden. I got to watch in person my cousin (played for the Oregon Ducks) play against Bill Walton. But I don't watch basketball so much anymore. With cable, I now can literally watch sports on TV 24/7, 365 and still not watch even a tenth of what is available. Way too many choices! I gravitated back to hockey in part because with Baseball, Basketball, and Football, "Been there, done that."

    So, if you've "Been there, done that" with other sports," give hockey a try.

    Perhaps you missed the fact that I am a longtime Red Wings fan too. I have watched many, a many Stanley Cup Playoff game.

    I remember playing hockey on the frozen lakes of Northern Minnesota everyone did, I have a Nephew that plays hockey for the Bozeman Icedogs. The North Stars left for Dallas, so now I root for the Wild go Wild lots of good games to watch.

    Would like to see the Sharks do it this year, but they are pretty beat up now. Then again, this is hockey. Maybe that is what it takes to succeed.
