Calling Out for Work

Options
OK I live in San Diego County and just had a co-worker call me and tell me he can't come to work tomorrow because he is snowed in.... San Diego California!!!

He lives out in the sticks up in the hills and right now 6" on nice white powder are on the ground and more to come tonight.

After 20+ years of having people call out from work this is a first for me.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Calling into work for 6" of snow? Are you kidding me? That's not even up to a Honda Civic bumper.

    9yE2m0x.jpg

This was the day that PS Audio closed down, I know because Jesse couldn't get a hold of them and he asked me how bad the snow was. I still went to work. I don't remember how much it was but looks like at least a foot and a half to me, took me quite a while to dig my car out.

There was a dusting in Marlborough this morning when we hit the road for NH.
Y'all are gonna get Nor'easterated tomorrow, though, it is said.

We went to see Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt in Boston last night with friends & spent the night at our friends' place (in Marlborough). The aforementioned singer/songwriter/guitarist guys were very good -- very entertaining. And the sound was remarkably good at the Wilbur Theater.

Well our roads are not made for snow. This guy does live in the east sticks of the county too where it does snow. Just never had anybody call in snowed in before in 20+ years...

Think I've heard every other excuse not to come to work.

1" can shut down a city here. It isn't the snow that's a problem. It's roads that hover at 32 degrees and end up with an inch of ice. We don't have infrastructure for that kind of stuff.

It's all relative. I laugh when northerners complain about highs in the 90s. We've had times here where it doesn't get below 90 for weeks... as a low temp. That was wicked since we also had a few storms roll in to keep that humidity up.

    This.

    Need I remind you:

    w6au2ahm0gtg.png

yum, yum. now that would be nice.

San Diego is bad enough when it rains I would hate to see snow below 2000'. Up in the hills above 2000' it does snow a little. Born and raised here it was fun to go play in an then go home to catch the evening surf. Then I went in the Army and got it first hand @ FT Devens MA of what snow is.

Fortunate to work for a place where I can occasionally work from home. Between Skype and Cisco IP Communicator (virtual desk phone on your PC) I can still be in contact with those who can make it in. And I have an electronics workbench at home to do some bench work if needed.

But even with the Noreaster today I went to work.

    Stay safe.

If DC sees a solitary flake, everything comes to a complete stop, everyone calls out to stay home, everything is closed and all supermarkets are cleaned out of all essentials! It is absolutely hysterical.

Everything is relative. I bet 6" in the hills can make the roads nasty, especially when it rarely occurs. Heck, I have a co-worker who works from home if it is raining. Of course, she is 'different'. She just had orthoscopic surgery where they cleaned up her shoulder, and she is out for 6 weeks disability. I had a bone/cartridge transplant in my left knee and took a week off. Of course, I didn't know I could get 6 weeks short term disability either. LOL.

People around here can't dive when it rains, CHP did close the 8 for a few hours yesterday.

Guy that got Snowed in up there was working remote today and kept loosing his sat connection. From the news this last storm really had a dumping up there.

Two reasons I don't fault people calling in when they are not sick

1 weather. If someone thinks they can't drive in the rain or in this case snow I don't blame them.

2 If the have a viagra moment..... never fault anybody for that

Other than that I am a mean boss and it's get to work

I love snow days in VA. Like Cathy said, everything comes to a grinding halt. Work doesn't even bother with the "get in if you can" message and just let's us "work from home" instead. I could use a couple days with the fireplace roaring, tunes a blaring and work being tinkered with between trips outside with my dog!

What exactly is a viagra moment? I only have two things coming to my mind. Fortunately I don't need viagra. Sometimes the wind blows and I have a pitched tent.
