I saw this today while I was at Polk's ARAD facility. It belongs to one of the guys there, evidence they truly are audio geeks.

In case you can't make it out, it was made by Atwater Kent.

    That's a tuned RF (TRF) receiver; pre-superheterodyne; i.e., no IF nor mixer stages; multiple tuned circuits, all needing to be adjusted manually.

    Atwater Kent was from up this-a-way (Worcester, MA). The man himself (Arthur Atwater Kent), I just read, was born in Burlington, VT.

    The TRF radios have (or at least can have) very wide (audio) bandwidth -- bad for crowed conditions but great for audio :-)

    Yes, cool.

    I have one early radio, but it's an RCA Radiola (superhet), no TRFs here -- so far.

    Here's my circa 1939 Detrola 3202 tube radio... Works great. Got it at a flea market for $10 cleaned it up and refinished it.. Did another (American Bosch) that I gave to my dad and he listens to it every day... Interesting thing about this one is the push button tuner presets. Does AM and SW.

    I recently worked on a Detrola radio/turntable recorder for the Phillips Gallery in D.C. that allowed people to make their own records from blank discs. It was part of this exhibit:
