Rogue RP-5 Review

When I opened the door for the FedEx guy I thought he had delivered the wrong package. I didn't think the box would be so big.
ahog325byyr0.jpg

Very well packed. What am I going to do with all these peanuts? LOL
c00t93vcmsn1.jpg

Even the box the RP-5 was in was big. Big enough that I'm thinking they could have just shipped it that way.
5tu2eh35i11p.jpg

No assembly required. lol
wxf4i5r2j8xh.jpg

and now on to the eye candy.

I'm still configuring stuff but once I got it hooked up I put on Diana Krall "Live In Paris" 45rpm LP. Yes Skip my jaw dropped to the floor. Did I know what I was missing...NO! I'm hearing details I've not heard before. The piano notes are so precise and clear. I can even hear her hitting the keys when she strikes a note. When the bass comes in its not boomy like it was at times before. It's tight and precise. I guess that's the biggest thing I'm hearing is that everything is so precise and life like. Like you're at the concert and it seems to fill the room more then before.

Anyway I'm going to do some fine tuning on my setup and then sit down and play a lot of different music to get a good feel for this and check back for more comments.

Congrats man... just wait until the tube rolling bug bites you.

I invite you up any time to compare your Rogue to the Pass Labs. I think it would be a fun comparison. we can toss some steaks on the grill and listen to some tunes...

Very nice looking unit....glad to hear you are liking it so far. So, for the record...where you not aware of this unit until I linked it in your other thread? If so, that's pretty freeking cool! Would love to listen to it myself.

Maybe if the new stuff takes off more will be selling there old stuff? A chance for me to jump on the Rogue bandwagon. LOL! Good things do come it time.

Beautiful piece! I'd love to get my ears on one sometime, are you using the onboard phono section?

I've read where Rogue will be coming out with an RP-3 one day also. Enjoy!

This thing is a keeper. Even at lower volumes it sounds good. I'm not using the inboard phono preamp. The inboard is a SS pre so I decided to use my Pro-ject tube box DS. I'll try the inboard but first I'm going to upgrade my cartridge to a MC down the road.

I put on some Dave Burbeck Time Out 45rpm and it's just at a different level. When the bass drums hits in Time Out the slam just makes you take a second look. Listening to The Doors now and not at a high level. still come through very clean and detailed.

Now I'll I need is the wife to go on an errand so I can crank it up! ;)

I'd bet a chicken sandwich that the internal phono beats the Tube Box DS. Might wanna try a DL103r cartridge. Lively, balanced, great value.

I gotta pass this on. I was having a problem with my new Rogue. For some reason it was not turning on and I had to unplug it to get it to reset and turn on. Well I called Rogue and talked to Bill and Mark and they could not get this working right. They got ahold of Acoustic Sounds who I bought it from and I got a call from them.

Long story short is that they all (Rogue, Acoustic Sounds) bent over backwards and I got a new unit in less then a week. Customer service from both is far above and beyond anyone I have ever dealt with.

The only bad thing is that I have to start the break-in all over again. :p

Well, sometimes that's why you buy new and you have that Warranty in your hip pocket.

Good on Rogue and your Dealer, and good on you for having the patience to see it through.

Patience was on my side because I didn't have it the week before and getting everything right was important to me.

This morning I'm trying out the Tube based headphone amp. I have to say the sound coming from my AH-D5000's has never sounded this good before. Very rich and detailed. Reminds me of when I was a rebellious kid listening to this Album at a friends house with his Dad's headphones late into the night.

My headphones have been sitting to long but will be used much more now that I have this Preamp.

I lighten up my system this morning by taking my Pro-Ject Tube Box DS out of the rig and hooking my TT into the Rogue. Set it up for my Ortofon MC. The only setting I wasn't sure of was the capacitance setting. You can set it to zero or 150pF, I set it to 150pF. Spun some Vinyl and I have to say this sounds cleaner, more detailed and I'm hearing a little more bass with the Rogue phono pre. Maybe the changes I'm hearing are because I've gone from a tube phone pre to a SS that's in the Rogue. I don't know but I'm liking it so far. More detailed I guess.

So I can live with this and start looking into tube rolling the Rogue. Not sure what tubes I should try. It has Four 12AU7/ECC82 tubes stock. What would you guys suggest I try?

On the cheap, Tung Sol 12AU7 with horse shoe getters are the $hit. The BlackGlass TungSol AU7s are a smidge better though but cost more.

In my Rogue gear I have found the an RCA Black Plate Command 5814 (variant of the 12AU7) are exceptional

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pair-RCA-Command-5814A-12AU7-sub-NOS-NIB-Black-Plate-Vacuum-Tubes-Same-Dates-/321977459210?hash=item4af75a220a:g:nk4AAOSwSdZWcb2t

I just received a pair of Gold Lion 12AU7's and a pair of 12AX7's and I have to say for a New Production tube, they sound VERY good from top to bottom. Absolutely no tube glare, very smooth, and priced right.

CBS Hytron 5814s are another great 12AU7 variant as are Telefunken smooth plates.
