do you think it would be much of an upgrade from my Yamaha?

I have not heard the Yammy you refer to but I have indeed heard the 806. I have had mine for about 4 months now and it has yet to dissapoint me in any way. I use all digital cables in and out (HDMI) so there is no upconversion taking place anywhere, but I hear that is one of the 806's strong suits. I run a PS3 into it and take advantage of the newer codecs (Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA) and they are amazing. It pushes my Monitor 70 fronts, Monitor 40 surrounds and my CS2 center with ease, and very good results. I also have a 60" HDTV that has an amazing picture, so it fits very well into my humble setup. It also has pre-outs for adding an external amp, which I plan to do here soon (I hope) with either an Emotive XPA-3 or an XPA-5, then my speakers will really come alive. There is a known problem with the 806 having some blue dots on the display screen during certain modes (should be able to do a search here or on Google to find out more) but I have never had any problems with mine (knocks on wood) Maybe since I'm just using the receiver as "pass through"?? Beats me, but I would recommend the 806 to anybody, hands down one of the best receivers for the price (about $650) P.S. Tool rules!! A local radio station out here just had their annual "Super Bowl of Rock and Roll" and Tool won, lol.HT Rig

I don't see the 806 being an upgrade from the RX-v863...
What do you want to "upgrade" about your receiver? -

$599 here. they had one left im sure it's gone now. -
Amazon has the Onkyo TX-SR806 for $621 (no tax, free shipping) so unless you live in Oregon or some state without tax it would probably be just as cheap or cheaper to order from them.

This sort of confirms what has been articulated in other threads on this forum: the close out "deals" at Circuit City don't seem to be anything extraordinary.2 Ch.

I have to agree, I've passed by 2 CCs in two states on a trip and both were selling them for 799--As has been said you can get them in the low 600s.
Personally, I don't think that is much of an upgrade from the Yammie. One of the Stereo mags even rated the 863 over the Onkyo 876? Which I can't personally agree with.
Power wise the 805 was the real upgrade from the Yammie because the 806, is not an 805 in terms of its 'real' audio prowess. What the 806 brings to the table is 'not' improved AUDIO over last years model but extra HDMIs and better Video processing.
Since I am not and have not 'ever' been concerned with 'upconverting' all my no longer 1st rate vid-sources and basically use a Toshiba HD-DVD to upconvert DVDs. I find Video features next to useless. No reason to pay an extra 500 for something you don't even need to use?
Spend the money on good AUDIO. And for 500 you can get a good 2-3 channel supplementary amp? Keep the Yamaha and get a Rotel or Emotiva to power you speakers.

Hey Tool
I agree with cnh who is up past his bedtime, again.:p
The Onk 806 ( or even the better amped 805) will not be much of an upgrade over your Yamy (105wpc vs. 130wpc). IMHO, you need at least 200wpc to drive those huge A9s. Let the Yamy drive the rest of your speakers. There are a lot of excellent used stereo amps in 8/10 and 9/10 condition on eBay and Audiogon for $600 to $800. That would be the upgrade I would go for w/ your system.

Mike is right in all cases.
Including the fact that I should be in bed. The only reason I'm still up is that I almost bit the dust in the snow. Lost control of my car briefly, managed to prevent a major accident on the interstate and gently bank my car off the guard-rail back on to the highway with minor scratches on the Impala--that's some HEAVY sheet metal there. Almost NO noticeable damage...who would've thunk it?
That's what you get for getting cocky because you've been driving in SNOW for years?
And to all a goodnight!
