Onkyo TX-SR806 question.

My father is looking at getting an Onkyo TX-SR806 HT receiver and I need to know if it can run 6ohm speakers... I have called Onkyo and after waiting on hold for over an hour I gave up and sent an email, three days later and still nothing... :mad:

From the Onkyo website it looks like it can but I would like to have it confirmed before he orders it.

Anyone on here run 6ohm speakers on an Onkyo 806?

    I have the 805 which is almost the same thing and there is an option in the menu to choose which OHM it is. Mine says 4, 6 , 8 ohm. hope this helps. Here is something on AVS about the onkyo

    The 806 is rated for down to 4 ohms, and also for continuous loads of 6 ohms. So you should be all good.

    I have Onkyo 706, you can set to 6ohm, or 4ohm. But I have no idea why I can't set it to 8ohm!.. Any one knows?

    onkyo has the setting for 4 or 6 OHM (so if you have 8 OHM speakers you set it to 6 OHM) not sure why they do this.

    Because it's rated for continuous 8 ohm, and continuous 6 ohm performance. So that would be the standard setting. I don't believe it's rated for 4 ohm continuous though, it's just certified for 4 ohm performance. So that would be why it has it's own separate setting.

    Anyone correct me if I'm wrong though...this is just a guess.

    By the way, I read the manual, and can't set more than 6ohms, because that default settings is for speakers between 6ohm and 16ohm. Setting to 4ohms its for just 4 ohm speakers, and setting to 6 ohps is for speakers between 6-16ohm. I think then that if the speakers are 8ohm, the output sound will be at 8ohm!.. But not sure..

    the 806 is
    "Continuous 6 Ohms Rated"

    (so far so good)

    and the 806 is also
    "CERTIFIED 4 Ohms Performance"


    So it appears that you can crank all day with 6-ohm speakers, and Onkyo will back their gear, but their confidence level drops a bit with 4-ohm speakers.
    Certified 4 Ohms "Performance" isn't the same as 4 Ohms "Rated".


    The manual does show on Page 116 "Speaker Impedance 4 - 16 Ohms".

    The setting on the Onkyo is essentially a current limiter to keep the amp section safe. Put simply, they're cutting the juice a bit when you pick the 4 ohm setting.

    Something you need to keep in mind when given ohm ratings for a speaker's impedance is that the rating is for the NOMINAL impedance. The speaker, by its nature, will vary resistance... so it isn't unusual for a 4 ohm nominal rated driver to swing to 2 ohms. If you're curious, hook up a meter and check the speaker's resistance... then move the driver in and out with your hand and you'll see how that number changes.

    Setting the Onkyo to 6-16 is fine for 8 ohm speakers. There's no 8 ohm setting because there doesn't need to be. You aren't actually adjusting anything regarding the best impedance... This setting is just a limiter for anyone using speakers rated below 6 ohm nominal. If the amp sections were actually beefy enough for 4 ohm use, the limiter wouldn't be necessary. That's why I strongly recommend external amplification for those using 4 ohm nominal rated speakers.

    The Speakers are 6ohm nominal 4ohm minimum... After the replies and looking around some more I am very confident the Onkyo will easily run them.

    My Onkyo SR805 (same as 806 basically) handles the 6ohm Polk SDA1C with no problems, cranking very loud for extended periods. Being THX Ultra2 certified means that it can handle speaker loads down to 4 ohms.

    Even the 605/6 can handle 4 ohm loads with relative ease (a little more heat). All the evaluations on the 606 in Home Theater Mag/Ultimate AV/etc were done using 4 ohm nominal speakers and it didn't sound strained.

    But I understand, my dad bought an Onkyo 805 to drive a 10 year old Bose Acoustimass set... some people think they need to bring bazookas to knife fights.
