For those of you that have sold equipment, how did you determine what to ask for it? I'm going to be upgrading in a while and want to get a fair price for my Pioneer Elite VSX-37TX receiver. I've looked at Audiogon and Ebay, but have not seen one for sale. The Audiogon Bluebook does not have a listing for my model. Any ideas?

    Frank,

I recently sold two of my receivers. I had five receivers in the house so I had to do something!

I sold a four month old Yamaha on eBay for 2/3 what I paid for it and I was the original owner. That's pretty much what other folks had been getting for this receiver as I had been watching eBay for a while to get an idea too. That was a current model Yamaha RX-V1300 too.

I sold a two year old Onkyo receiver for 1/2 what I originally paid for it to someone at work. This was not a current model either but the one prior.

That's a nice receiver you have. Its got THX going for it. Unfortunately, most audio equipment is like car purchases once you drive off with it the price drops drastically. If you sell it for 2/3 what you paid I think you do good. 1/2 at the minimum...maybe a hair less just to get it off your chest.

Even if eBay doesn't have the specific model you have take a look at other models retail versus what the used are selling for. I think the 2/3 rule is what you are going to find for the current stuff less than a year old.

Man, people are getting killer deals on eBay. That last item on the post above was $1,900 new but sold on eBay for only 1/3 original price. Bad news for the seller but good news to potential buyers (with some risk involved of course).

Frank, I hope you have better luck than this. That's a killer receiver you have. What you upgrading too?? Outlaw 950?? Put your receiver on eBay (or try the forum first) for what you think is fair and have a reserve price. If no one bids on your reserve or above you only lose a few dollars for posting it on eBay. Worth a shot..worked for me.

    Frank,
Good move posting here for now. ebay audio prices seem pretty soft in general right now. Every once in while something takes off and goes out of line high vs. historical, but for the most part I'd estimate prices are off ~20%.

I consider 40% of list a great deal, 50% of list a good deal and 60% of list OK but no great deal. (as a buyer). From what I've seen age doesn't seem to matter too much unless the piece has really outdated technology. 6 months or 6 years, no matter.

Msrp was $1900, I paid just under $1200. I'm asking $800, which I feel is a fair price. Only time will tell I guess.

Now you have "list" but what is that really??

alot of receivers "List" for say 1400.00 and sell for $850.00, 900.00 maybe, and a few years down the road its not worth near that much maybe 500.00,600.00 if your lucky.. I bought a Onkyo receiver 6 years ago and it cost 700.00 and now its worth about 75.00 -100.00.. I actually sold it needing some repair and got 50.00 bucks.. The guy already has it fixed and working so i would say he got a good deal.

Age does matter unless its a flagship or high end receiver like Frank has here. Otherwise it's like computers, they get updates every 6 months to a year with new extra's and makes the old models worth $0

I mean who wants to pay 700.00 say for a receiver when 900.00 or $1000.00 gets the new up to date super de duper formats and extra's?? It sucks but is the truth. I upgrade my computer every 6 months and sometimes sooner of thier is a boom in changeing processors, motherboards and stuff.. I sell on e-bay my old parts and pay pennies on the dollar for the new upgraded part.. It's great!! but you always loose money on audio usally

    Faster,
You are correct sir, and your info is appreciated! That's why I wanted to get some info from some of you guys that buy/sell/trade on a semi-frequent basis. I think the price I'm asking is fair, I'm not trying to gouge anybody, just trying to get a fair price.

I'd suggest, although I see it's already posted, ask what you think is fair. If someone is interested, you can always haggle price.
