I know Sony's newest PlayStation3 is highly touted as a great mid-level Blu-ray Disc player, but does anyone in the group have any experience using it as a CD Player?

Inspired, CD reproduction is, if anything, simpler technologically than playing Blu-ray discs. Along with just about every unit that plays CDs, the PS3 reproduces them with flat frequency response from 20-20KHz and with inaudibly low noise and distortion. Nothing can do better than that, regardless of price. Whatever is on the disc, you get. That's all there is.

I use mine as a cdp and LOVE IT! I also keep all my music on my computer and listen to them through the wireless network via ps3.

Interesting opinion. It does an ok job. But nothing better? I think not.

I am just starting to use mine, and it sounds good to me. You can store all kinds of songs and create playlists. Kind of like a tiny jukebox.
If anybody knows, what audio settings should I output to get the best sound quality via optical digital outlet?

That's total BS. In fact, out of all the BS you post this one may take the cake.

How many CD players have you auditioned against the PS3 and which ones? There are better CD players than the PS3. Its internal DAC is ok. The analog outputs are awful. HDMI would be a good option to transport the sound, but connectivity is limited. Toslink is convenient.

I quite honestly don't think it is considered "audiophile" cd playback. Dedicated players address things such as jitter correction, clock/timing, a/d d/a conversion. Even my Pioneer Elite 79avi dvd player (which can also do sacd and dvd-audio) is considered "adequate" in cd playback. My own experience is that the PS3 I own is about on par with the Elite for cd playback.

Thanks for the feedback. I have one on order for one or our flatscreens and am going to give it a try with my SDA's just to see how it compares to my dedicated Yamaha unit. It sounds like it will do a very decent, but not quite remarkable job.
