Speakers High Up

In my living room, I have a large... I guess entertainment center would be one word for it, that covers pretty much the entire wall. I rent the place, and one of the stipulations is that thing is kinda stored here, and that's the only place it will fit, so I'm stuck with it.

I don't use the living room much - my real setup and TV are all in the finished basement - but I have a Denon 1503 and a couple of Polk R15s hooked up in the living room, and would certainly like to get the best sound out of the space.

My question is - I have to put hte speakers on top of this entertainment center thing (no room to the sides), which means they're about 6.5 feet off the ground, and only inches from the ceiling.

What would be the best orientation of the speakers? On their sides? Tweeters out or in? Just standing straight up like normal?

And yes I'm going to play around and see which sounds best but I'm curious what the consensus is on such a setup.

    In an entertainment center that large, could you not just put them in a shelf closer to normal level? Remove a door or something and store it elsewhere? Pic's maybe?

    Hmm, possibly. THey'd have to be right against the wall unfortunately, but do you think that might be better?

    I would stand them up, upside down (tweeter on the bottom) and tilt them twords the listening positioin. (use door stops and come up with a way to ENSURE they do not slide forward.)

    Bass will be a little funky that close to the ceiling so you may want to cross them over a little higher to your sub than you normally would. My center channel is very high as well. Was fine about 18" from the ceiling, but now that it is within a foot - it definately has a negative impact on the sound.

    Might want to put something underneath the rear part of the speaker to aim it down some. Of course, use common sense to make sure the speaker won't slide forwards and come crashing down :) To improve the sound some more, you can put some acoustic damping material to catch the first reflection point off the ceiling, which should clean up the sound a bit.
