Aspect ratios are strange...

Aspect ratio's rarely make sense. For reference, here's my equipment specs:
DLP HDTV: 720p native, 16x9
DVD: 16x9
Movie: Medicine Man widescreen version SDVD
No stretch, zoom, any odd settings used--just straight 16x9
Last night I was playing around with different resolutions on my DVD. When I tried 480p (DVD from HDMI) the TV displayed a very narrow picture, though properly scaled. When I switched to either 1080i or 720p from the DVD, the picture nearly filled the screen. I'm

That's because nativity 480 formats are 4x3 where 1080 or 720 formats are 16x9. Your TV was set to full screen and wasn't trying to make a 4x3 screen 16x9.
