no sound from optical cable

I just bought samsung bd up5000. My pre-amp don't have hdmi input so I hook up using optical cable but no sound come out at all. But when I try with coaxical cable then the sound is fine. Do you think the optical out put form blu-ray player is not working?

    Did you check all the settings on the BRP??

    You might have to pick which Digital out you want to use.

    i think i did set correct for digital out put because there is sound out for coaxical cable.
    i have tried with 2 optical cable but still n luck

    Try a different player. If it doesn't work then you know the problem is probably on the receiving end of things.

    Is it going to the Ref50? Is the REF50 setup to receive and Optical signal?

    i was using opitcal cable with my current toshiba a2 player before i replace with samsung. i will try put back my toshiba a2 to see if there is sound or not.

    i have ref 50 s2 they have optical input

    I assume you are trying to connect the player to a processor. I would check the processor configuration for optical digital input. If it still does not work, try a different optical digital cable.

    Usually there are two places to check,
    1. the bd up5000 setup menu should have a setting that lets you choose between optical and digital.
    2. The Pre, some pre, dvr lets you assign specific optical and digital connection to a selector example Digital 1 to dvd or digital 2 to vcr...

    I have to assign the inputs on my pre/pro. It has defaults, but usually they aren't what I would use, so try the pre/pro menu.

    i don't have any problem using optical cable hook up with my pre-amp when i am using dvd player or toshiba hd a2 player. So my pre-amp is set correct. I read the samsung manual and look at the setup menu there is not thing to select between coxical and optical. I try to repalce with other optical cable but stil no sound. I think the problem with samsung player. I will bring back to CC to exchange anohter one today.

    I got difference player but it still do the same no sound when using optical. There is red light come out from optical cable. I check both maual on B&K and samsung nothing mention about optical and coxical switch.
    Look like I have to use coxical cable for hook up. I don't want to return player because I love the reon chip in UP5000, it make my dvd disc look great.
    Any more idea to make optical work.

    BTW I do not own this player, that said I downloaded the "manual" and here are the steps:
    1. Look at page 28.
    This is how you connect them, but if you go to the end of page 28 it says:

    * Please set the audio in the menu screen according to the Amplifier. (See pages 37~38)
    The position of terminals may vary depending on the Amplifier. Please refer to the user's manual of your Amplifier.
    * When using this connection, discs with LPCM audio soundtracks will only be heard over the front two channels.

    If you turn to page 37-38

    BD and HD DVD discs may include three audio streams.
    - Primary Audio : Main audio sound track of the disc
    - Secondary Audio : Provides audio for the PIP window of an HD DVD
    - Effect Audio : You will hear a sound every time an item is
    selected in a BD/HD DVD menu.
    PCM : Select this when your equipment (Home theater or
    Receiver) does not decode Dolby Digital. Primary,
    Secondary and Effect audio is possible.
    Bitstream(Re-encode) : Re-encodes the Primary,
    Secondary and Effect audio streams for DTS.
    Bitstream(Audiophile) : Provides a higher level of audio quality when watching a disc. Only Primary
    audio (main movie soundtrack) will be heard.

    i try before and after firmware update. Since i got sound from coxical then i don't undersand why can't i get sound from optical. As you know most of the time the setup for digit out put from player is the same for coxical and optical. I have may difference dvd, toshiba hd and pioneer elite 94 bluray and I don't have any problem using optical cable. I will call samsung today.
