I am thinking of bidding on these..

Whats your opinion on these, I will be using ps3 for sacd, br and mp3 music on the hard drive, connecting with toslink and a 4.1 setup. Rti10 fronts, Boston acoustic surrounds and polk 10" sub.
I think power will be great, just wondering about connectivity. Am I losing anything by no hdmi? I don't think so because I never see myself going to a 7.1 setup. Maybe eventually upgrading to a Moniter Audio gold series 4.1.
Thanks for any good input.

Beware, the seller's feedback isn't great. Because of that, I'd pass.
And yes, you'll definitely need HDMI connectivity.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Sorry if its a dumb question, but I thought the only real difference between hdmi and optical was that optical would only do up to 5.1 and hdmi would do 7.1 sound.
What are the other differences?
In my haste I allready ended up with a reciever without pre outs and I am trying not to make another dumb mistake like that, thanks for the help. -

Since technology changes rapidly in the HT world, especially with the advent of the newer surround sound formats, it is best to stay as current as possible.
What is your budget?
BTW -- not sure where you got the 5.1/7.1 HDMI vs. optical thing from, but that's not correct.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Ht is not my #1 interest so as a result I have other hobbies higher on the list of expendable cash. That is the reason I have been looking on ebay and what not hopeing to get a setup from someone who allways has to have the latest and greatest.
But the more I read stuff here I am thinking I should hold out and go for the latest and greatest processer and just look for a good used amp.
I guess I am also a little pissed I spent $400 on my reciever (onkyo 604) thinking it would do the job, but if I knew at the time that it really wouldn't I would have spent more money and bought the 805 and been content for a longer period of time.
What is a realistic budget?
Say the next step up from a 805? How much more would you need to spend to get a signifacant improvement in sound quality?
I know its subjective and a matter of opinion, but I'd like to hear some opinions on the subject.
I am thinking rather than buying an avr and external amp, thus not using the amps in the avr, why not just buy a processor?
I guess I am not sure where to start. -
Here's my advice -- sell your Onkyo and get an Emotiva LPA-1 multi-channel amp. They're brand new for $499. And if HT is not your #1 interest, invest in a used Emotiva MMC-1 pre/pro for around $550 or an LMC-1 for $350. Then upgrade the pre/pro later this year or the next to another Emotiva pre/pro and get 40% off.
Bottom line -- for less than $1,000, an Emotiva amp/pre-pro combo will blow away the 805 or virtually any other AV receiver on the market.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I will be very happy to up grade for 1,000. I only wish I knew this one year ago. -

I'm just going to be blunt. If you are using a PS3 for a source and playing Mp3's then steer clear of any mid-high end gear. Your sources are horrible and better gear will only make this more evident. If you don't plan on using a good source in the future, all your efforts and $$$ are wasted to a great degree.
No disrespect meant, just a fact to consider before dropping some dough.

IMO the worst thing you could do is get the latest and greatest. If you care more about music then HT I would suggest getting a older nice pre. I see Rotels and older B&Ks pop up all the time for <$500 which should work excellent for your situation. You can pair it with a nice <$500 amp and easily beat any receiver out there.
Example, older B&K flagship does 7.1 sounds phenomenal with movies and equally good with music, only $475. -
No offense taken, I appreciate the input and it is a valid point. Thats why I put my intentions in the original post, to get realistic advice for my situation.
And yes the cymbals in mp3 sound like crap -

The silver lining is IF you plan on upgrading your source in the future (Ps3) then invest the money in solid gear. We can't all buy everything at once. If you are happy with your source and using mp3's, then just don't blow a huge wad on the rest of your gear because the mp3's and Ps3 limit the quality of sound and no amount of higher end gear will change that.

Allow me to disagree, kind sir.:D
The PS3 plays sacd's, & cd's, very well. I'd be hard pressed to distinguish between it and my dedicated sacd player. (though, it's a low $ Pioneer 563)
The PS3 also upconverts dvd's to around (IMO) 90% BR quality.
We agree completely on the mp3 subject, but it sounds like the OP put more priority on sacd and BR.
Now if he wants to play MCH sacd,(using the PS3) and the new DD tru hd/dts ma, he's going to need an hdmi receiver, or pro., that has v1.3. Emotiva will soon be releasing new pro's with this, but none of their current models are capable of sound through hdmi.
I just wish sony would produce a 8-channel audio out cable, but that would make too much sense..... -
since you all seem willing to help me with some useful advice I will further elaborate on my situation.
For movies (I never watch regular tv, no cable) : I have a new 40" 1080p sony lcd, I am very pleased with it, I never watch a movie and think "damn I wish the screen was bigger" or "damn the blacks don't look right" The sound is fine, I could see going to a center channel up front to improve dialoge but even that dosen't seem extremly important. The rti10 and sub have plenty of bass and b a bookshelfs I have for surrounds are fine, the onkyo reciever I have is fine, it is connected via hdmi by the way. I really don't feel the need to upgrade for movies.
General music: the hd on the ps3 makes it easy to store and organize mp3s, I get up in the morning and turn it on while I get ready for work and turn it on when I get home while I make dinner and clean up around the house. It fills the house with sound fine and it is enjoyable. I can live with the system for that however I still feel a desire to upgrade.
Listening to music: This is where I get dissapointed, when I actually sit down on the couch with a Belvadere and tonic, squeeze my lime and want to sit back and enjoy. I know my speakers have more to offer. Some mp3s can be bearable and some are down right horrible. At this point I only have one sacd (Rolling Stones Let it Bleed), it is dual layer and a side by side comparison is actually stunning. I plan on buying more sacd material once I actually take the time to search through the titles and find ones I like. I like to sit back and really listen and take note if the drummer is playing a dry snare, using the stick on the rim or muteing cymbals with his hand. I really enjoy it however I don't do it every day being that I am still hyper active at 39 and seldom sit down, my knee is actually bouncing like crazy as I sit and type, I feel like I gotta go
So in a nutshell with my priorities being what they are and using the ps3 as I do I don't know if I am shooting myself in the foot by buying say a used b&k setup where I would go hdmi to the tv and optical from the ps3 to the processor for sound, or buying the emotiva and going hdmi from the ps3 to the processor and then hdmi from the processor to the tv.
Maybe it would help if someone could explain the differences in audio, hdmi vs optical because what I thought was the case apparently is not and given my situation is this a drawback to the ps3?
Thanks for the help!! -
Correct me if I am wrong, but for SACD playback from PS3, you will need HDMI. No analog outs and I don't think toslink will pass SACD signal due to copy protection implementation. I hope I am wrong but I think that's how it is.

We're all at a different point in our audio journey and we have different expectations. I'm a strictly 2 ch audio guy so the DD tru hd/dts has no bearing on what I consider important.
Any mid level stand alone cdp will sound better than a PS3 for redbook and any decent sacd will sound better too. Certainly some of the multi channel advantages you list you do get with a PS3 that you won't get with a decent stand alone dvdp.
I've been down the road of mediocre dvd players and they don't do music any good at all. I use a separate stand alone DAC in both my systems and the difference in source quality is night and day. Again, multi-channel format I have no desire whatsoever to pursue for audio. Up converting on the level you describe is of no benefit because the quality of the components used are not the best.
It all depends on what your goal is and where you are in the hobby. Perhaps the PS3 is passable for him (not for me) but get rid of the MP3's if you are looking to move up the chain.

He won't need an HDMI 1.3 receiver to get all the latest DTS HD / Master Audio formats since he already has a PS3. Just need one that will accept linear PCM over HDMI 1.1 or 1.2. See here. For multi channel SACD I believe HDMI 1.2a or higher is required. You don't have to spend a mint on a receiver with all the latest decoders since the PS3 can pretty much do it all.AVR: Pioneer VSX-84TXSi (RIP - lightening) / Amp: Sunfire Cinema Grand / Klipsh R-10B Sounbar, LC65fx / Sub: Elemental Designs LT/1300 / TV: Panasonic TH-50PH9UK /SIZE] -
Ahhhh MP3's...... So convenient, but hard to enjoy at times for sure. I find mp3's sound alright on earphones when I am struting around town or at the gym, but I have never been impressed w/ them on full sized speakers (for obvious reasons. If you are going to play MP3's over a stereo for any length of time or any amount of musical glee there are somthing you can look out for or try to smooth out the digital rough edges. I am sure most of this information falls into the duh... category for some of you, but it may help out some rookies.
MP3's are so great and convenient because you can fit so many of the bugger on a CD or hard drive. However, this great strength leads to there greatest downfall. There are a compressed and encoded version of a particular song. Compressed and enocoding invariably leads to loss is sound quality. I find most MP3's to sound hollow and not very enveloping. The low-end is undefined and the high's are usually all mix together in one muddy sound. Now, on to some possible solutions.
1) Try to get files with the highest bitrate possible. This basically translate into the amount of information encoded in the file. The higher the bitrate, the more info, but the bigger the file (a PS3 has a monster of a HD so that shouldnt be a prob)
2) I have used a tube stage preamp/processor with great results and you should be able to plug it into the your reciever in the pre out or pre in area (not sure if that would work w/ your particular receiver). Tube's have a wonderful penchant for adding warmth to the sound, reducing harshness that is often accompanied by digital sources (MP3's, WAVs, etc). I use one of these processors (avail on ebay) in between my computer and my amp in my secondary setup with amazing results.
3) If you are uprgrading your receiver try to find one that has enhancers for MP3's. My yahama rxv-1800 isnt the best receiver out there, but I bought it because for the money is was very well equipped, this included a compressed music enhancer which makes a world of difference. It is designed to restore the banhwidth loss at either the low end or high end of the MP3's. With this enhancer on, I can tolerate litening to mp3's on my ipod, through the receiver on my LSI's (which are notorious for high lighting bad sources).
If anybody has more experience with specific tube pre's or buffer I would love to hear it. I am new to the tube thing but so far am impressed... Next upgrade may be a tube cd player...... Just need more money.... If anyone has any spare cash lying around let me know (I do accept credit cards
