I'm considering adding a B&K or other brand amp to my setup and using my Sony as a pre-amp sometime in the next few months. It will be my first venture into separates. Does anyone know the difference between a non-reference amp like the AV5000 and a reference series amp like the 7250?

IIRC, the topology was pretty close between the two, but the 7250 has twice the wattage, and as a result has a MUCH beefier power supply.

Is there typically a difference in sound quality or is it more about ability to drive speakers without fatiguing?

Mostly just driving speakers. You get an extra ~3db of headroom w/ the 7250. It was months, maybe years between when I'd heard each, but I don't remember any striking differences. The AV5000 was in a fairly small room and had no trouble going plenty loud.
