OPPO makes a great DVD player that can rival players costing many times more and in some cases exceed them!
I have a 971 which is similar to the 981 in terms of pq..very good but dependant on what type of display you have. Macroblocking can be a problem with some sets.
Having said that, I think you might want to wait a week or two and check out OPPO's newest player..the 983 which is rumored to be a killer sd dvd player and is due sometime around the first or second week of March. It uses ABT 102 deinterlacing chip and ABT 1010 scaling engine. The price is said to be $399.00

I love my oppo 981 but it bugs me to no end that there is no "auto-off" feature. Also, I think the remote is terrible at best. The writting is small enough I'd say you better have 20/20 reading to see it. I would also like a button on the remote that could backlight the keypad. I bought the dvd player to have a good picture and not for the remote, so given that I really do still like oppo and this player.Onkyo TX-SR805

Denon dvd players over the last 8 years have done nothing but break down and give mad problems. Compared to Sony and Pioneer Elite, Denon breaks 400 to maybe 1 of one of the others. Pioneer ELite and Sony DVD players basically work until you wear them out.
I'm no fan of Denon DVD players. They used to use Panasonic to make there older ones. I'm not sure if that still goes on today.Dan

Not sure what I think of HomeTheaterHifi anymore but it's a review. Not sure about plunking down that kinda change for a std def player at this stage. But this one does look to be a great one!Home Theatre: Epson 5020ub, Elite Screen Sable Frame 100", Onkyo 818, Oppo BDP-103, Tivo Series 3, Xbox 360, Sealed Dual Sound Splinter RL-p 15" DIY sub powered by Behringer EP2500 with FBD, QSC RMX1400 powering LSi15, LSiC, LSiFX sides, and Lsi7 for the back, Technics SL-1200M3D -
I have an Oppo 981, and it's been great. Not one problem in a little over a year of use.
Than new Oppo looks nice, but I wouldn't drop 400 bucks on sd player, and the "cheaper" Oppo's are going to be just about as good.
JMHO.My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself. -
A lot of people are picking up Toshiba's HD-DVD players for SD use. They are a good up-converter with the added ability to play HD discs. My Main Gear

I have no experience with the Denon's but the Oppo 980H has been outstanding. Looks much better than the older models also IMO. I actually sold my Toshiba HD-A2 in favor of the Oppo. I think some might disagree but I think the Oppo did a better job in the up conversion IMO. A lot of SD definition DVDs looked almost as good as the HD DVD's. So I sold all the HD stuff. The difference was not big enough for me to keep investing in movies. I have a cheap 720p Westinghouse which may be a lot of my problem. I intend to go to Blue Ray when I get a better 1080p TV or Projector Oh and not to mention the SACD playback from the Oppo was a added plus for me.
