A good start for a nice Home Theater System

Well I've recently gotten all of my Home Theater equipment stolen - from my father of all people! And who said that I told him he could have it and I'm not getting it back. Which is untrue but I'm not welcome in his home he said. Anyways enough of the family drama which is called "my life in a nutshell" I'm wanting to "try" to start my Home Theater over again, but am limited in funds. I only make $250 dollars a week that I can spare towards my HT so with that in mind what do you think I can do with that?

    The best thing to do is just save whatever you can each month, then buy a couple pieces at a time.

    Or save up and buy everything at once.

    Well I mean I know that and everything buying one piece at a time. But my question is what I should I buy first? I know whatever it is I'm gonna do research and ask around and check out other things in that price range but I just really need a good kick in the **** in the right direction.

    Since you will need everything - save for a month and let us know when you have a grand....

    Outpost.com still has the RTi8's for $150 each and they would make a great start for a home theater - from there get a decent used AVR for around $250-$300 and then start searching for a CSi3 or 5 on sale or used.

    Finish it up with some FXi3's or RTi4's or 6's and you are done in about a month of saving.

    If you can truely save $1,000 per month though, I would listen to the TV for a few months and get an LSi system. (but thats just me)

    Well I've got some old speakers lying around here somewhere that I had from like old boom boxes and stuff if I can just start with a decent receiver. Does anybody know of any good ones that would be a good start for me? I've got Circuit City 5 minutes down the road and Best Buy 45 minutes down the road and that's all I've got. No Fry's or Tweeter's or nothing cool like that, just CC and BB.

    Outpost.com is the internet store for Fry's. For a slight charge (I think they refer to it as shipping) they will bring stuff to you. No travelling needed on your part.

    Edit - doesn't really matter that much anyway, looks like the deal on the RTi8's is over. :(

    Why the hell would I wanna go back to school? I've got a good career going for me and my son has everything in life he needs and then some. Now that the most important thing is taken care of, I can do for myself a little bit.

    OK you said save up a grand right? Well I just checked out CC and they have an Onkyo TX-SR805 for $1,100 and they have a Denon AVR-988 for $1,200. Which between the two do y'all think. Also at CC I might be able to qualify for a CC credit card.

    yeah, not quite sure where jtgranby got that from...but I would say definately follow McLoki's advice.

    If you already have some type of speaker to start with, go with the receiver first. If cost is an issue, I would recommend the Onkyo 605 (can usually get it around $350)
    It doesn't have any pre-outs, but it should last you a while and give you some great sound for whatever speakers you decide to go with.

    buy used or refurb stuff.... best bang for your buck. go for an older Denon from a few years ago... they will probably have all the bells and whistles.. minus HDMI of course... but they are solid and hold up well over time. After that later down the road you can add a amp if more power is needed.

    Buy used gear,your buck will go way further.

    $250 I can spend after bills are paid. Also it's hard to trust stuff that's used, but from what I've heard it's hard to trust that's brand new too.

    ok...maybe I'm different here on how to put together a system. But this is how I always go about it..12v systems or home I do this.

    I research what it is I want. Then I start buying 1 piece at a time. Everything goes in a closet or on a shelf until I have all I need. Cables and accessories included. THEN I assemble everything. I wait till I have what I need and don't 1/2 **** the project. It sucks at times because I want to pull everything out and try it...look at it..play with it...but I reframe from doing that if I can. I like to see and hear the whole package together and completed.

    Just my OCD I guess?

    I have purchased a lot of used gear over the years. It's called Smart buying and if you do your homework you can get what you want. Glad to see you are getting on with life. Good luck and DO NOT GO IN DEBT for this stuff.

    Ok, I have got to ask... how can your dad steal your stuff man? Call the police, and tell him that they are going to escort you over and you are going to remove all of your belongings. I assume you are over 18 years old? Unless there is more to the story then you are saying (Which is highly likely) just go get your stuff. He can't take what isn't his. End of topic. If he tries to, he gets a Notice to Appear in court from the police (Same as being arrested basically) and you get your stuff back. All you would need is proof that you paid for the items, receipts whatever that is in your name and they are yours. Nothing he can do about it. Just take the police along as an escort.

    Good luck. Oh, and buy used if you have limited funds... A no brainer: probably get twice the quality at the same price as new.

    Well stupid me I had this stuff for like 2 or 3 years and don't have the receipts anymore. So there's no proof in it. I'll just count it as a loss, get better equipment and not go around my family anymore. This isn't the first time something like this has happened, but it WILL be the last time. He used to come in when I used to live at home and take me PS in the middle of the night and go pawn it the next day for his dope money. You can say he's a grade A piece of ****. And he's always wanting to fight me over something stupid - mainly cause he's fiending because he's out of meth.

    Go check out your local Circuit City. They have the older Denon models on clearance from what I've been reading. Some people are picking up the Denon 987 for under $400. They might have been picked clean by now, but its worth a shot.

    RXV series is great. Plus it will do 4ohm I believe. I know there is a lot of hate for Yamaha here, but I found that the RXv series has great units.
