what kind of sound does a capacitor make when it's going bad?

so my Pioneer A-88X is still giving me fits.. it "pops' slightly after it warms up. does that mean a cap is leaking? I found some ugly residue under the amp attached to the frame? is it easy to spot which cap is going bad? does it ooze like green alien blood or some thing like that?

I haven't had one ooze slime yet, but I have heard that can occur. The one I remember clearly was doing the popping noise you reference, and also sending brief bursts of distorted sound to the speaker on that channel.DKG999

Caps can faill in a million ways. Short out, go open, become intermittant, change value, etc. They can and do leak in some cases, too. The ones I've seen didn't look like alien blood (or maybe the alien blood I've seen was different) but if you have goo in your amp I'd certainly check the whole thing out.

yeah, every couple minutes it'll "tick" or pop in the right channel. and I think that is what is the problem with this amp. it works and it has good sound.. but eventually the quality degrades or cuts out briefly.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
