Are power conditioners functional without electrical grounding?

When I plug my PSW10 subwoofer into the outlet, I notice a hum, even when it's set to off. I read in a separate thread that this is due to electrical noise. Which seems reasonable since some of my other appliances hum, like my tube tv. My house is pretty old, and I know for a fact that it does not have electrical grounding connected to the outlets inside the house.

So, would a power conditioner (like a Belkin PureAV) be functional without electrical grounding (I'd use one of those cheater plugs to properly connect it)?

If you lift the ground, your disconnecting from the house ground. If your house doesn't have a proper house ground, I'm not sure how much protection your going to get other then the breaker in the surge protector will trip. No where for the energy to go.

If your getting hums, you also could be getting it from you cable or dss feed. If this isn't properly grounded, it will add hum into your system. Also make sure the sub and all gear on the system is on the same circuit. Make sure nothing else is on that circuit. This will greatly reduce Hum.
