If you're connecting through hdmi 1.1 or above, it's really hard to argue against the ps3. The biggest drawback is no multichannel analog outs (but you're connecting through hdmi). The second biggest drawback is no IR remote control (only bluetooth) for universal remotes without a third party dongle (actually usb plug) solution. The third drawback is no bitstreaming of TrueHD or DTS-HD MA to the receiver for decoding there. Although the ps3 does decode everything except DTS-HD MA internally.

Advantage of the BD-30 is that it does bitstream the new formats. But you have to have a receiver/pre that decodes them and they are very rare now except for the new stuff from Onkyo and Denon.

Aside from that, the ps3 has just about everything else you would want in a player including Bonus View (Profile 1.1, PiP commentary) and firmware upgradability to BD-Live (Profile 2.0, internet connectivity features). It is also rumored to be firmware upgradable for internal DTS-HD MA decoding if they ever get 'round to it.

The BD-50 will be released around summertime if you can wait and will be the first blu-ray player to do all of the above.

My suggestion is none other than the ps3 since it has the ability to be updated to profile 2.0 when BRDA releases it.

The current stand alone players(someone correct me if I am wrong) do not have the ability to be updated to the new standard that is coming this summer. Thus, any stand alone player in my opinion is useless since when the new movies come with profile 2.0 you won't be able to utilize all the features. One of the people on the blu-ray disc association is actually quoted as saying "Early adopters knew what they were getting themselves into" when asked about profile 2.0 and the current stand alone players.

PS3 or nothing if you absolutely have to have one now unless they have stand alone players out now that support profile 2.0.

It is difficult to produce an upgradable player for BD-Live since you need all the internet hardware to begin with (like network plugs etc.). While often derided as a game machine that people don't need, it's the large processing power, on-board memory, and internet gaming connectivity that give the ps3 all its upgradability.

BD-Live is a little oversold right now IMO as it has nothing at all to do with watching a stellar picture and audio quality movie. They will have to be very creative with this feature to provide movie watchers with actual content they can use rather than just marketing movie stuff online to people who just watched the movie.

    BD-Live is Profile 1.1 isn't it?

From what I read/understand, Profile 2.0 is a whole nother ball game with other features.

BD-Live is the marketing term at CES the blu-ray people were pushing to avoid the image that players lack the latest and greatest (No Profile 2.0? The player must not be able to play the latest disks, then. (False, BTW)). It really is an internet upgrade so they can push content to the player over the connection. So possibly games, popularity polls, and other stuff you can do over the connection. But will people find value in it? Who knows? Just like how often do people watch the PiP commentary in Profile 1.1 (Bonus View)? My guess is the main value remains watching the movie in great PQ and AQ. And that has nothing at all to do with PiP or internet features. But depending on what you like YMMV.

Gotcha, seems like it could be one of those things too that people view as "My player lacks it, and therefore my player doesn't have the same PQ/SQ as the new players." Which obviously would be completely false as well since the two have nothing to do with each other.

Basically, if you are someone who enjoys all the extra features, then wait for the new line of stand alones. If you don't care and want just the PQ/SQ then go for any of the players on the market right now.

Thanks Cheddar...Looks like the BD-50 is the ticket...and I'm willing to wait. Though I could try to a PS3 from my sister...she maybe able to get me a discounted, or re-furbished PS3...thought they are hard to come by.
