Anyone had an experience with buying refurbed units directly from Onkyo?
They have a pretty good deal on the 805 and I was thinking of getting one

What's the difference from refurb to new?
-
Manufacturer level refurbs ( FROM the actual place that made the item ) are usually extremely safe purchases. Now buying something at frys with that infamous white " Returned but fully inspected " sticker proudly displayed....not even on a bet would I touch something like that. :eek:The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club

Got one last month. It was pretty much flawless, they ship quick, and no problems so far. I opted to add the extended warranty.
Edit: the refurb warranty is 1 year, the original new is 2 year. Its not much to add and extra 2 years to the refurb (3 years total)See profile for rigs. Nothing else here. -

A while ago I bought a refurbished TX-SR702 from Onkyo and although the receiver was fine, there were a few scratches on the unit so I returned it.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I got a refurbed TX-NR901 at ubid (authorized w/1yr warranty) Works better than new 2+years later. Sticker on the box said "cosmetic". I still really don't recall there being any scratches when I opened it.

Just got my "refurb" 805 today, looks brand spankin' new. Throwing in the Onkyo 8222 stereo for free was icing on the cake, and free shipping, no tax and a one year warranty. Awesome deal.

That is great to know. I missed out on the refurbs, had problems accessing their web site. Bit the bullet and bought a new one, but may look to get a refurb for the basement.Mains - RTi6

****! I ordered my Refurb 805 about 1 week before they started giving that free 2ch receiver. I think they also lowered the price by almost $100. I called and tried to get something out of Onkyo (either a credit or the free receiver), but no luck.
BTW, I'm really enjoying mine despite not getting the sweet deal that all the recent purchasers are getting. I have absolutely none of that lip sync problem they talk about at AVS. I mean, some of my channels have lip sync problems, but I know that is not the Onkyo, its the source, or my DVR causing it. Bluray, OTA (through the TV), and most channels have no error.See profile for rigs. Nothing else here. -

I Own the 805 and am having lip sync problems with my system. You mentioned AVS. Would you happen to have some reading resorces available so that I may attempt to correct my lip sync issues?

Thanks
There is a monstrous thread over at AVSforum. 1st thing to do is put all your AV sync values to zero. You have to set it for each input. That's all I did. After that, I let Audyssey setup run and set all the values except for the subwoofer level, which I just raised a few dB to sound right.See profile for rigs. Nothing else here. -

Arghh! I've been burned. Got all my HDMI/DVI cables today. Definitely no HDMI output at all. Oh well, still less than a $600 investment after I ship it back.

Did you go into setup and turn on HDMI output? There is a setting that disables it, located in the input/output assignment, monitor out. I'd double check all the settings before shipping back.See profile for rigs. Nothing else here. -

update...
Just thought I would try to plug everything in again before I called support. The HDMI out works fine now. I'm not exactly sure what I changed although I do have various cables and dvi/hdmi adapters, so the cable combination may be a little different. I used my HD-DVD player to test every hdmi input and they are all fine.
Issues:
Having trouble getting cable box to sync with (box)DVI-->HDMI-(Onkyo)->HDMI--->DVI(TV)
If I do (box)component-->component-(Onkyo)->HDMI--->DVI(TV) I end up with 720p at the display instead of the 1080i from the source.
I could try a DVI splitter at the display and run the cable box directly to it. -
Ok, just confirmed the 805/705 downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI. They make you upgrade to the 875 to avoid this.:(

this is correct. i still use component with my xbox 360. i just ran the onkyo 805 hdmi to dvi splitter to my tv and my 360 component to my tv to preserve the 1080i and i use a harmony remote so it's no problem at all.
as far as the lip sync issue on the 805, i've got some. my hd dish network is synced well minus a few broadcast channels whose sounce is jacked as far as lip sync. but my p3 blu-ray and my a35 hd dvd players both suffer a bit from the lip sync. i did the 30' and 0 delay tricks to no avail. it wasn't enough of a problem for me to return it, but i do hope some miracle firmware will fix it. otherwise, it's not toooooooo bad.

I'd check with your cable company and see if they have a newer HDMI equiped box for you to swap out with. That might solve some of your problems. DVI>HDMI never works quite as well as HDMI>HDMI. I had awful problems with one of my satellite boxes that was DVI output (to my previous HDMI TV).See profile for rigs. Nothing else here.
