What about one of the unviersal Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players? Would that be considered a "win" as it can play BOTH formats?

Wow, you have really high standards, just out of curiosity what players are up to your standards?

If you go by this list the XA2 is one of the highest rated DVD players you can get and the A1 is not to far down the list.

they are equal, in my opinion, as far as sound and picture. just a different set of exclusive movies.

though i still prefer hd dvd. if a movie is available on both formats, i choose hd dvd. online features all work NOW. blu-ray is still updating their profile to internet interactivity.

Agreed both are equal, and the XA2 is a superb player, Polk Thug must have extreme standards. I try to both titles on both, keep things evened out in my library unless one has a better transfer than the other.

that's what i've been reading. Warner is supposedly holding out until CES 2008 to announce their support to the format who sold the most SOFTWARE during the Christmas/holiday season, which so far was Blu-Ray by a margin of almost 2 to 1. I believe "300", the most popular hi-def disc is selling 2 to 1 favoring Blu. That imo speaks volumes.

Also keep in mind that the deal with HD-DVD and Paramount/Dreamworks is for only 18 months. And it was made, what, like 6 months ago? When is the next CES anyway?

Personally I could care less which format wins. I'm not buying either until this stupid war is settled once and for all. :)

    Revel Performa M-20

That deal excluded all Spielberg movies (Indy 4) CES is usually the end of January.

Unless Microsoft wants to throw another $100 million at HD-dvd next year, it may be the end of them. Word on the street from some CES and Cedia guys I know, is that Blu-Ray is already the decided victor amongst installers.

Don't forget that for the past 2 months or so (or whenever Toshiba released its new line) 300 was included in the box of the new HD DVD player. Along with one of the Bourne movies. Most new adopters of HD DVD would have no reason to buy a copy.

Microsoft won. Both formats will remain a niche market for the next couple of years while Microsoft continues to buy infrastructure globally for a launch of Video content sold online.
