While many people love vinyl, I would not recommend a 16 year old pouring money into it unless you are sure. Spend your money on an IPod and dock!

IMO, get a TT. Better sound. End result.
Convenience = compromise.

I totally disagree! This young man will have a world class rig by the time he is 25. -
I agree that if this is a hobbie that Sophie is interested in then to go for it! I am just cautioning that old technology was replaced for a reason (scratches and non portability). Many people do feel that the sound is better, and starting a hobby at a young age with passion can have many benefits. My Main Gear

sorry to bring up this dead thread but i need some more help. the music hall 2.1 is ordered from quest for sound. and now i need to buy some records and anything els i will need. this is the list i have.
1. records to listen to.
2. some kind of dry brush.
3. record cleaner. i found this i think it is doable for me. as long as it would work fine. i have also found that someone keeps recommending the "spin and clean" has anyone tried this, and how is it compared to a diy vacuum cleaner.
4. wet brush.
can someone recommend good places to get the brushes?Polk monitor 10B's and 5 jr's

Try Music Direct, Elusive Disc, KAB audio, and turntablebasics.com for brushes. I've found that KAB is a bit cheaper then either Music Direct or Elusive Disc, but they take a bit longer to get things. I use a Hunt dry brush and a Mobile Fidelity brush for the wet stuff. KAB also has a cheap vacuum record cleaning machine that uses your upright vacuum as the motor. I've got one and it works pretty well given it's price. Congrats on entering the vinyl domain, too!Wristwatch--->Crisco

Let us know what you think of the 2.1. Hit the local goodwills and antique stores to find some good selections of records. Goodwill prices range from .75 to 1.75 and a lot of antique stores will have good quality records for around $3. I've bought a lot of $10 to $50 records and a lot of .75 cent records. Many are sitting side by side on quality and enjoyment.

Todd the Vinyl Junky! ttvj.com is another.
I highly recommend the Hunt EDA Mk VI for dry brushing. It also has an anti-static quality to it.
Madmax is right on the money. -
I have a 2.1 and have honestly only used it a handful of times. I enjoy Vinyl, but for as little time as I have available, it's not nearly as convenient.
I need to bring my table to a local person to make sure it's level and calibrated correctly. I did the weights on the fly and it seems a little off.
Hearing, I need to send you a couple discs so you can tell me if they are in decent shape or not. If they were CDs, I'd say there were in great condition, but I know vinyl is more finicky.
Congrats on getting a TT! The 2.1 seems like a great deal, and I'm sure will do well once you get some good records and everything dialed in.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I have yet to find better prices for dry brushes than sleevetown. Oh yea...also a great source for sleeves.
In regards to records...a few good sources have already been mentioned. You might also try a Half Price Books if you have one near by. Also if you ever make it to Des Moines or Omaha I could point you to a number of good stops. BTW if you have something specific you are looking for I would be happy to check local stores for you. You could either PM me or simply post the album you want here. And of course there is always the Flea Market right here. Russman recently posted a ton of albums that are very reasonably priced, and I believe many are still available.

I will rarely if ever buy any vinyl that isn't sealed still. even if an album is only a buck, and that album looks good, but pops and crackles a lot. i'm ticked off because i had high enough hopes for being able to listen to it when I get home and clean it off.
With sealed albums, i'm rarely disappointed in the sound quality.. and less chance of pop's, clicks, etc.
I just ordered Eric Clapton - The Complete Clapton on 180g 4LP Box Set.... Yeah baby!

i have been looking at records and most are nm so these will be fine but is it worth it to buy something in vg+ or excellent condition?
one last thing, if something is mint or nm will it need to be cleaned before it is played? im thinking about asking for some money for Christmas and then deciding on a cleaner.Polk monitor 10B's and 5 jr's

All used records need a good cleaning.
I do not like the "visual" grading system. I have records that are mint, beautifully black and reflective like a new record and they are so noisy that they are unlistenable. Then I've come across records that looked like someone **** on them and smeared it in with nicotene and after cleaning it up sounded wonderful. The only thing that I can tell you for sure is that if you see finger prints they are most likely bonded to the vinyl. You can be almost 100% sure that those will have some noise associated to them.
It is a crap shoot Bro, but I've found that I always come out on top. I've purchased 50 used records at a pop and invariably way, way, way more are good to go then need to be trashed. -
I've had albums that have been graded vg that look better then an nm graded album from another seller. It's very subjective, I just remember who I got the good albums from and bought from them again.i have been looking at records and most are nm so these will be fine but is it worth it to buy something in vg+ or excellent condition?

Joe's right on the money with these 2 points as well.
I've got my best vinyl deals from the Goodwill. Epay tends to be overpriced and the quality is a crap shoot. You'll need some type of cleaning system to get the most out of your albums; keeping them clean extends their life as well as your stylus'. You don't have to spend a ton of money, either. When I started with vinyl I had no money. I used a really good, soft bristled paint brush, a cleaning solution of denatured alchohol, deionized water and the smallest drop of ivory soap in a spray bottle, with deionized water in another spray bottle to rinse. It's not the best method out there, but it suited my needs at the time.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

Just a note on this; notice ben used Ivory soap. If you plan on using soap make absolutely sure you are using soap that leaves no residue on the record or anything for that matter. Listening to a record with residue on it is like listening to veils over your speakers. FYI; Dawn leaves a residue that isn't apparent to the naked eye. I learned the hard way!:o -
got the TT for Christmas last night, hooked it up and put on an old elo record i found. WOW even the old never cleaned record sounded great! i could tell that it was not a cd, everything sounds much more real. next step in this addiction is a real phono amp and new pre.

last night i got about 25 records from one of my moms friends that didn't have a TT. most of them are perfect and minty.
something i have noticed is that it looks like ALL the records are warped when i play them. the arm goes up and down every time the record goes around. what could cause this?
the cables on the TT are only 2 or 3 feet long so i could not put the TT where i wanted so for now it sits on top of my pre. what is the best place to put it?
i ordered a wet/dry brush. i am planing on making my own solution, what would you guys recommend for that?
im sure i will have more questions in the next few days.

If the LP is warped, other than trying a clamp.....not much you can do there. A *little* warping isn't going to kill you but eventually it will wear out your stylus.
You really want the table on a solid base.
I'd recommend purchasing a premade solution or concentrate that you add to distilled water.
Good luck and enjoy.

It sounds like the sub-platter may be out of true. I had this happen once before with an MMF-2.1. What happens is when they press the center steel post through the hard plastic sub-platter it goes through slightly crooked.
The easiest way to verify this is to turn on the table, and without any record on it just lean down and look along the bottom edge of the steel platter. If it appears that the platter is moving closer and farther from the table on each revolution then you probably have a bum sub-platter.
If this is the case just contact Stephen at Quest for Sound and tell him the situation. He will most likely put you in contact with Leland at Music Hall and they will just send you a replacement sub-platter. Free of charge of course.

Mount the TT on the wall with brackets or wire. All floors move up and down. The walls also move up and down but much less. Do this test jump up and down near the TT not rotating and see if the arm moves when on the LP.
