Ok. not really.. but maybe some of you nice people can channel some of your good luck my way then.
my Pioneer Elite A-88X amp died in it's sleep tonight.. i turned it on for 30 minutes to warm up... the right channel has been cutting in and out lately.. then tonight while I was in the other room.. she passed at approx 10:30pm.
ok. well she's going under the knife late this week or early next week. Maybe a nice defibrillator can revive her.

yes sir. that's part of the gamble you take with older used gear.. it's old and susceptible to dying at any time. but what can a guy do? it was growing on me with those sad puppy dog eyes
it followed me home.

the guys at OneCall are checking it out. I guess very few parts are still available for it from Pioneer and Circuit City.

lets see... i got the amp for $15. and yeah it's down now.. but if I replaced it with a new one of similar build quality.. i betcha i'd be in for about $700 to $1500 :eek:
If I didn't buy the SDA2B's for $100 with two bad tweeters and replaced them myself for $98 and tried to find a pair of tower speakers with the same build and quailty.. I think i'd be looking at about $1,500 to $2,800 for new :eek:PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

&$@!57)_+)*^5$#@!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok my beloved Pioneer amp is dead again. Had it fixed for a whole week, then tonight while having listened to some albums for about an hour.. my friend and I swap turntables and fire her up again. Burning smell, oh sheite!!!!! turned if off... the right channel is dead again. burned up the right ch output amps freakin' AGAIN!
WTH? how can this happen within just a week of getting it fixed after being down for four weeks?
All i can think is there is something else causing a short inside the amp that is frying the right channel every time. A short must be sending some current zap to the right channel and causing it to blow up or melt basically. It smelled hot/burning... as soon as I smelled that. of course it was way to late by then.
I'm stumped as to what the problem might be. My service guy is gonna kill me for toasting it after only a week out of the shop. UGHHHH!!!
It wouln't be so bad if the amp was a POS and sounded like ****, but it doesn't. it sounded so sweet tonight and the past couple nights with some sweet Japanese vinyl from the 80's.
My friend that was here listening to some albums agreed, it sounded excellent. He's got good ears for vinyl.
Sorry people, i'm just venting a little. It's not even about the money to get the amp fixed, it's just that I want to be able to solve this shorting problem and just enjoy my music again.
I have back up gear of course.. but it doesn't sound anywhere near this good, trust me. It's like the Pioneer Elite amp was made for the Pioneer TT and the SDA 2B's.

Sound like your service guy didn't fix the problem. . . you should be killing him rather than feeling the opposite!
However you may want to check your speaker outs, the wires and the connections on the back of the speakers. I've had amps blow up before and it was because a single strand of speaker wire which I couldn't see touched the other post. -
OK, i'm going to go take the amp in again for repairs... ugh!
WE'll see what happens this time. I honestly can't figure out why the right channel keeps blowing up. I can understand if the speaker wires touch each other they can fry an amp, but as far as I can tell mine don't touch each other. so that leads me to believe it's something else wrong with the amp.
I hate to keeping frying the amp, just so that I can isolate where the problem is coming from.
If the right SDA 2b had it's wiring crossed somewhere inside, would that also cause an amp to be fried? If so, why doesn't this problem show up when I power it with other amps? I'm stumped.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Makes me wonder about why the guy from whom you bought it, sold it.
Can't remember the story & hope that's got nothing to do w/it."Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger -
if i didn't like this amp, i'd toss it out an airplane window. dang this is getting frustating.
i'll be rechecking the wiring in the right SDA 2B again to see if anything jumps out at me.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

way overdue update on the Pioneer A-88x integrated amp. It's in a Seattle repair shop called Precision audio and video.
The tech guy called today.. and said that as i suspected one of the four large caps is leaking goey stuff. So they are planning to replace all four phat caps to start with... to a cost of $225+. Ouch!
if that solves the cutting out of the right channel, then it's good to go.. but it may have other problems too.
*yeah, i can't use this sweet amp with the SDA 2B's anymore. Boo Hoo!
