Video signals into receiver?

I was just wondering why you would want to run a video signal, such as an s-video from a dvd player, first to your receiver then to the tv? I'm fairly new to this so sorry if this is a stupid question or if it's been answered before.

    Its a vidio switch. You don't have to fuss with the TV and AVR to watch your DVD... just the AVR.
