HD-DVD questions.

I am thinking of jumping on the HD-DVD bandwagon. For 2nd generation players, I basically have 2 choices, both from Toshiba, HD-A2 and HD-XA2.
HD-A2:
max 1080i resolution (although there are rumors of 1080p with a firmware update to come in the near future).
Will only pass HD audio via HDMI. (will send 5.1 via standard optical or coax (one of those anyway)
If recieve audio via HDMI, your AVR or Pre\Pro must be able to decode Dolby plus or true-HD (or the DTS variants of that)
HD-XA2:
1080p resolution out of the box.
Street price is about double the HD-A2.
Can decode all the sound formats in the player and pass them via analog outs to your AVR.
Even though the above looks like statements of fact, if I am incorrect on any of them, please let me know. The 1080p or i does not matter to me since my display is only 720p anyway.
Is it worth getting the HD-A2 even though I will not be getting the best sound from it (if it means waiting another year to get the HD-XA2)?
Is the sound improved with the HD-A2 over a standard DVD player if they are both using the non-HDMI audio option?
If I hook one of these up to my TV via hdmi, do I have to mute (or turn all the way down) the TV every time I watch a movie so sound does not come out of the TV?
Any other obvious things I should be aware of prior to jumping in??
Thanks for all your help.
Michael
Edit - for the record, I am still toying with the Idea of spending alot less and just getting a Sony DVP-NS75H. It is getting very good reviews and is about $200 less - but the 5 free HD-DVD movies you can get with the HD players right now is very tempting. (and taken into account, would make the prices of the HD-A2 over the sony pretty close)

Michael-
If you can swing it grab the XA2, you will not be disappointed!
The build quality and most importantly it's ability to upconvert is in a class by itself. Well worth the money for it's upcoverting abilities alone(HQV REON Processor).
Connect the XA2 via HDMI to your display, use the 5.1 analog outs to your NAD and enjoy the new world of HD and TrueHD sound!:)
BTW, Amazon has an amazing price on these right now!

Was I correct in my assumption that to get the sound quality out of an AVR or Pre/Pro without HDMI inputs, you have to use the a2? (and the pre/pro would have to be able to decode trueHD and other high def sound formats)Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)

The A2 does not have analog outs. In order to get the sound quality with a non-HDMI receiver you'll need the XA2, or the first gen players. Those are the only players out to date with analog outs.
BTW, It's too damn nice outside; when you aren't busy give me a ring sometimes...

Is the XA2 better than the XA1? I'm not concerned about load times. I am concerned about PQ for standard DVD's and sound. The XA1 does a really good job of up-converting and I'm already using the pre-outs with that latest firmware. So is it worth taking a hit on selling my existing one and buying the new one?

If you are not concerned about load times, I'd keep the XA1.
If you want the best possible SD upconverting player that you could find for under $3500(and have money to burn), grab the XA2.
With my 50" display, the XA1 serves my purpose just fine. I'm waiting it out till maybe the 3rd gen player come around; If they are soo much better than the XA1, I might take the hit.

I wouldnt, as long as your current player shows no probs when viewing a movie why bother. I had this same question last week. The XA1 is a superb player.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!
