4 ohm v. 6 ohm Monitors

The problem with getting old is forgetting what you probably knew once upon a time. I have some Monitor 10B's for fronts in a basic home theatre system and picked up some 5 jr's for surrounds (replacing some small PSB's I use now). The 10B's are rated as 6 ohm and the 5jr's are listed as 4 ohms. Does this create a problem? If so, and I use the 5's with a stereo amp instead, is there any switching on the amp for the 4 ohm speaker? or does this depend on amp/receiver? I love my stereo equipment, but I've never had the attention span to be an audiophile. Thanks for any help. Mike

Does not create a problem if you amp/receiver is rated for 4 ohms. A lot of receivers maybe rated for 4 ohms but separate amp are better with dealing with 4 ohms. 4 ohms can really heat up a receiver.

P.s. I am running Yamaha 5240 Receiver which runs at 70 watts for 8 ohms, but appears to be rated from 2 to 8 ohms if I am reading the specs correctly. So, I gather that the smaller the ohms, the greater is the impedance and the more power that is required to run the speakers? Don't make me go to Wikipidea. And thanks engtaz. I have a vintage Yamaha A-700 integrated amp (with class A and B) and may just use that to run the new 5 jr's. The link below has a nice little discussion on 4 ohm speakers.

I really think the 4 ohm rating you got on the 5 jr's is mis-information. I don't know of or remember the smaller Monitor series ever being rated at 4 ohm nominal. They have always been 6 or 8 ohm nominal. Perhaps a misprint somewhere.

Anywhoo, if they are truely rated at 4 ohm they aren't like the LSi's in that they are NOT power hungry ineffecient speakers. They are very similar to the 5b's and those are very amp friendly and very easy to drive. You will have no issues using those as surround speakers or as seperate stand alone speakers.

Just to clarify.........do these have a single driver with a port or a single driver with a passive radiator? Peerless tweets or sl2000 (silver coil dome).

They have the silver coil tweeter and the port. One of the monitor manuals on the polksda.com site shows them as having 4 ohms...the same manual shows the 10B's as 6 , 4 ohms for 7c and 4 for 5B and the monitor 4 series monitors. I can't say if it is correct or not...just know what I read. I actually found the manual for my Yamaha HTR 5240 online and the instructions for connecting speakers with different ohms is ....elaborate. Is there an Audio Speakers for Dummies out there? I need a hobby!

I've owned many of the original Monitor series as well as selling them (New) back in the day and never ever had any problems powering them with standard stereo equipment. They are not difficult to drive and they are very amp friendly. I don't think you will have any issues.

I know what literature you are looking at and that is for very early generation Polk Monitors. Again to assure you, you will be fine.
