    Hello Captain,

That depends alot on your system and your specific dvd/sacd player. Very few players have decent bass management and even fewer receivers have bass management on their multi-channel inputs. What equipment do you have? (including speakers/subs)

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hello Captain,

Just pulled me head out of my ______ and realized that you had already listed your equipment!

I am quite sure that your Sony 555es receiver does not offer bass management on the analog multi-channel input (99% of the receivers on the market don’t) and if you chose to implement the digital bass management then you are significantly lowering the sound quality offered by a pure DSD SACD output.

As far as your DVD/SACD player is concerned, to the best of my knowledge, Sony has not produced a DVD/SACD player to date that has more than very minimal bass management. Especially with the type of setup you have (full range front and surround speakers), unless you want your speakers high-pass filtered at 120hz (not logical for your set-up) or you want them to play full range (kind of a waste of sub-woofer).

At least you are using full range speakers for all but center channel, most people are in a much less ideal situation (sat/sub or a mix of both).

I do think you would see some advantages (more control) in your system, but not as much as most people.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Mr Capitan

Look at the list of your equipment, you don't have any bass control management for your SACD and DVD-A, you want to tailor your system for SACD and DVD-A, you need the Outlaw outboard to control all of your big mondos speakers.

I'm kinda confused on the whole multichannel bass managment thing... If I have full range speakers around the horn why not keep the speakers on Large and not use a sub?

I noticed alot of 2 channel guys putting their nose in the air and I have to wonder if bass management is overkill?

I want to get into multi and will when the price is right but I'm going to deploy without Bass management and let it soak for awhile.

My DVD/SACD player is the DVP-NC650V. It does have some sort of bass control management system for SACD on the menu screen. I can adjust the distance of speakers, level of speakers, and size of speakers. I can also do it on my receiver, but like m-rorem said, it probably doesn't work on the 5.1 ch inputs on the receiver. I know that the bass management system on my DVD player may not be quite as effective as this thing, but I'd like to hear the differences. Can anyone attest to the effectiveness of this item?

the .1 channel is a dedicated channel, not using a sub you may loosing some bass infor that was intended in the recording, beside, you will need that sub to pickup the very low bass portion your full range speaker may not capable to pick up.

To get a better results, you the an outboard bass management control or the receiver that have this feature built in. To deploy without it like you said, try to get the DVD-A or SACD players that have these feature built in. Go without both, you may need to call 911.

If he sets his speaks to large, the .1 channel is automatically redirected to the mains - he won't lose any bass information.

Your point about the sub being better able to play the really low stuff has more merit, depending on what Henry's mains are.

Doc, I run the 800i's just like you but I also have tied in parallel my RTA8T's to them. I also run the CS400I bi-amped and the RT55 for my surround.

For multi-channel music do you think that would suffice without bass management?

    Thanks
    Henry

here we go again, yes if you set your speaker to "large" the bass channel will be redirected to the front speakers, it only work on the digital connection, not on the analog connection of SACD and DVD-A, without the bass management control, you're are out in the cold bro. I guess you're not take my word for it, just try it out and see. Have a great holiday...

The true intent of my question was regarding my speakers and not the actual bass management. In no way was I doubting your advice and thanks for your help here NDTA.

My thinking is that for a start, my multi-channel could be set up the same as 2 channel with the speakers on Large. While playing 2 channel I shut the sub off and keep speakers set to large so with the addition of multi-channel why not do the same for a start point.

I'm sure that when I get my Sub situation set to my likeing then the ICBM would be a great addition.

Onto Subs... I have never been satisfied with my PSW350 Sub and have a strategy for DIY'ing 1 just for **** and grins... but I'll probably upgrade when the DIY fails and just buy a better sub.

For now, I don't have a dedicated HT/Sound room so I'm far off from being complete.;)

I'll take your word for it - thanks for correcting me. This is a continuing education hobby for me.

    Hello,

Sorry not really in the market for a pair of RT35i's plus the cost of getting them to Alaska would be prohibitive and not a good deal for you or me. It will cost me close to $35.00 to ship the ICBM (at about 15 lbs) to the lower 48 so imagine what a 45lb box of speakers would cost?

I really need to sell my ICBM and cables a.s.a.p. so if anyone is interested I will accept a reasonable offer if you pay by paypal.

    Thanks again,

    Mark
