    If you've got a turntable, go to goodwill and just dig through the stacks of vinyl there. You'll find loads of crap, but you can afford to buy 20, 30, 40 of them for the cost of a CD. Take 'em home, listen, give the ones that suck back, repeat. You might find some gems, and at the very least you broaden your musical taste and hear things that you'd never find otherwise.

    I've also changed my tastes and started to listen to a wider variety of music because of changes in my gear. Even if it's not my favourite music if it sounds better than one cd I really like I might be more inclined to listen to the one that sounds better.

    Garage sales and flea markets are my main music sources. Not as cheap as vinyl but at a buck or two a cd it's affordable. I once got a box of about 120 cds for a buck. About half of them were burned cds but it really helped to get me listening to things I normally wouldn't, since that box had everything from slayer to bach in it.
