Static when not in 5.1

Hello all!

Let me start by saying I'm a really big newbie in regards to stereos and 5.1, etc. I have a KLH R-5100 receiver and just bought the Polk RM6800 speakers. They sound amazing!

However, whenever I'm not playing something which is 5.1 surround, I get a static noise coming out of all speakers. This is especially noticable when I am watching my satellite which, even though it is hooked up with digital coax, is only in stereo mode. The static seems to disappear in 5.1 mode with a true 5.1 thing playing (like a DVD). If I put 5.1 mode on with the satellite, I still get the static.

The static is noticable at low volumes, but it is somewhat annoying. Does anyone know what i can do for this? I'm beginning the think its the receiver, but I'm not totally sure. Thanks!

Tyler

The receiver would be my first guess - is an upgrade an option for you?

Or do you have a friend or co-worker that you could try out their AVR in your home for a day and see if that clears it up? You could also try and purchase one from a place with a liberal return policy (if it doesn't fix the issue). You could also try and call or e-mail tech support for your AVR. I don't think the problem is a speaker issue.

Just trying to give you a few options to narrow down the problem. good luck with it.

Thanks all. I can't afford to buy a new receiver now but a friend has one I'm going to borrow and test out. I'll let everyone know what I find out.
