Univac Desktop Computer
The 15-bit Universal Digital Trainer (UDT) was designed to train U.S. Navy maintenance technicians on digital computer technology. The solid-state CP-788 had 512 words of memory and was first delivered by Sperry Univac on July 5th, 1962.

The instruction set was similar to the 18-bit UNIVAC 1218 computer¹, it used the same assembly languages² TRIM III and ART418. The 152 kg desktop model consumed 750 watts and was built using the same credit-card-sized printed circuit cards as the UNIVAC 418 computer³ filling both the front and back of the machine. The cards were built with discrete components: diodes, one to four transistors, resistors, and capacitors. Each register bit required a flip flop⁴ storage element consisting of two transistors and eight diodes and the RAM was a stacked array of 15 magnetic ferrite core memory⁵ boards (512 bits each) with 8 µs cycle time, the logic operated under a 2.5 MHz four phase clock, additions took about 24 µs, and multiplications 130 µs.

A Friden Flexowriter⁶ with 7-bit paper tape punch/reader served as the user interface and I/O, or alternately, the machine could also be programmed directly in binary through the front panel register indicator-switches, lit with neon bulbs. The woman at the controls is the technical writer for the Navy's NAVSHIPS training course for the computer, with the help of Sperry Univac's engineers who designed the UDT she wrote the manual (see reference) and designed the lessons for teaching Navy technicians about digital computer hardware and programming.
