Hello,

Long time since I've posted on here.

Well my upgrade bug has returned.. darn it! Now I'm thinking about replacing my HSU VTF3-MK5 with an SVS SB17.

What started it this time, I was watching Master and Commander in the bedroom, had it turned up a bit. That SB2000 just hit hard and clean. Week later I put it on the main HT and the HSU hit good but didn't get that face pop I had from the SB2000. Don't get me wrong the HSU is awesome, some of my friends think I'm crazy for even thinking about upgrading.

HSU is tucked in the corner on the right, only place WAF fits. We have an open floor to kitchen and hall with stairs in back. The SB-17 will be a tight fit but it will work.

So am I just crazy or should I go for it.

    I say go for it!!! Ironically, I was in Bjorn's yesterday and they have that same sub along with a pair of Triton speakers used at the SVS trade show and now on sale for with 20% discount.

    If you're down around San Antonio, you can make a score.

    Nice set up by the way!! I run that same AC Infinity fan on my amps.

    Maybe check your calibration before you invest. That HSU should be plenty.

    I know, that's the only place I can put a sub.

    Would like to go dual but just no room.

    Oh I'm not saying the HSU sucks or anything. I've ran DRIAC from my laptop to calibrate in 12 point.

    One of the points of the SVS is it has it's own room EQ which should help.

    The bedroom SB2000 that little beast is just amazing in there. At one time I did put it the family room, it sounded ok just not big enough for the open space.

    Have you tried angling it out into the room? Also, put it on tall spikes that pierce the carpet.

    I wouldn't discount Hsu from an upgrade, I run a pair of tn1 subs and they can deliver for sure.

    Please don't get me miss understood, there is nothing wrong with my VTF3. It goes deep and shakes the house. I have all of my wife nick knacks glued so the don't fall or rattle.

    The SB2000 is in the MBR and smaller room and sealed sub adds to why it slaps me in the chest so good. The VTF3 gives a great slap as well.

    Sealed vs ported. VTF3-MK5 is a ported 15" 600W sub. SVS SB-17 is sealed 2400w sub.

    Like I said I have the upgrade bug. Last time I was going to get the SB16 but didn't. Would I honestly see a difference getting the SB-17? It's a want not a need.

    If you're happy with the VTF3 being able to shake the house & rattling all of your wife's knik knacks I would venture to say that switching things up with the SVS would be nothing more than a lateral move.
    Put the money elsewhere in your system.
    Trust me I fully understand the "Itch" & have had to talk myself off the ledge a few times. Lol!

    After having subs featuring their own calibration, I can understand your curiosity here.

    Would miniDSP make sense here, or would existing DIRAC capability compensate?

    Side note, I've been enjoying a VTF-15 in my main space combo system since 2014. I do like HSU.

    I second the sealed vs ported, I cannot speak to the existing sub, but I can vouch for the SVS room correction and tuning. I have had the SB-16 (predecessor to the SB-17) and have had it blend really well with multiple main speaker setups. I would recommend spiking as F1 said, or alternatively getting the SVS feet they sell which isolate (a different end result) the unit really well.

    I'm 90% that I'll get the SB-17. If I don't like it I can always return it. I'll think it over for a few more day's

    I'll hold the VTF3 for 40 days, a couple of coworkers said they want to buy my VTF3. Problem there is one of them is the guy I sold my RTi8's and VTF2. His wife want's to kick me in the ....

    Hahaha I can certainly relate to that. I was in Best Buy one evening just poking around when I heard a man and his wife discussing whether or not they should buy a bluray player or just stick with the DVD.

    As I overheard the conversation, the guy really wanted to explore that avenue but the wife.....no way and was doing her best to talk him out of it.

    I just had to be me and interject and all I said was, you get this much data information on a DVD and this much on a bluray disc. And of course, the resolution is at least double, so you get a much better picture.

    That was it and he was sold, but the wife??? Gave me a look that shook me to my core. I got out of there quickly lol

    Order placed. I added in the feet and calibration mic. Came out to $3k ouch! I figured for $50 might as well get the mic to get the best I can out of it.

    Delivery is 8-24. Don't know how that will go, it's our 33 year anniversary. I might try to delay it till 8-25. Bad enough my friends wife is going to kick me don't need my wife doing something in my sleep. If tracking shows it at FedEx Freight on Friday I'll try to pick it up. looks like it will fit in a RAV4.
