Which upgrade would you recommend? Polk SDA-SRS all original

Perfect mechanical condition. They are used daily in home theater, music, etc. There are three choice from Crossover Chef in eBay:

Option 1 $500

Option 2: $710

Option 3: $550

My speakers are in perfect mechanical condition but all original components on the crossovers. Powered by a sufficient amp. LOL.

Forget all that! Your just throwing money into inferior parts. Go all poly caps, the electrolytic caps are junk. In ten years you'll be in the same situation as you are now with those.
Reach out to @VR3, do it right. Buy once, cry once!
    You will not regret it!!
  • Thanks but in ten years I may not know who I am.

You only live once, you asked, I answered and am more likely in the majority in my opinion. That being said you got to do in the end with what you feel comfortable doing. Remember not every capacitor sounds the same. Some brands are far worse that others.
Those the guy on ebay uses NedLab, which I do not find anywhere but ebay. NedLabs site is all about OEM drivers (transducers) for other loudspeaker companies. I see they, NedLab partner up with Solen capacitor company. They may allow NedLab to sticker Solen products. Solend can be very harsh and strident in the upper frequencies.
    Be careful.

NONE of those 3 choices are worth spending your money on for all of the reasons pitdogg2 mentioned and then some.

There's plenty of crossover upgrade info here, so please take a look.

Here's a great source on the sonic signatures of more capacitors than you probably care to know about, but read it anyway.

Any crossover upgrades you do will be wasted unless you get rid of those nasty SL2000 tweeters. Call Polk and order eight RD0194-1. That's a zero not an O.

Please tell me you didn't think I was serious. :p
  • Thanks all. Been away from the interweb for several days. Thanks, one of my boys flys hobby aircraft and he talked me into learning to fly. I saw the Warthog at a garage sale, ready to fly and couldn’t pass it up. But until I get a lot better it’s gonna stay hanging there, lol. I have already crashed more than a few foam Alaskan bush planes. I found it’s a lot harder learning new things when you are older lol.

Thanks for all the great upgrade/refresh guidance. I will reach out to the two folks you all had mentioned.

I would love to upgrade the tweeters but will it really make a huge difference? I’m ok with how they sound now. That $3k is more than I paid for the speakers! I am hoping fresh caps and doing other crossover mods as mentioned in these forums will really clean these up and bring out the potential.

Is there a more cost effective alternative to the RD tweeters? Maybe sourcing them used?

    Thanks again.

Seems to be some confusion. The RD0194-1 tweeters are $60.00 each, so $480.00 for a complete set.

Are they a huge upgrade? YES!!!

I was always "OK" with how they sounded before every mod that put things at a higher level.

I was okay with how my SL3000 tweeters sounded in my SDA-SRS 2.3tl's as well. The RD-0198-1 after about 70hrs of run in time they definitely opened my eyes to how much better it could get. I know that the RD-0194-1 replacement for the SL2000 should be a large improvement. The dome material didn't age well and the frequency bump itself was fatiguing to most.
  • Thanks all. Yes, my math was a bit off. $480 is much more palatable. I don’t know where I got that number. I think I will do it along with the crossover refreshes and report back!
