Well .. our friend doesn't have very high standards 😜😜

If he likes the monitors 4s so much I'm sure he thinks OE800 is exquisite.

Got to get a needle to poke the hole where the Polk badge goes. A needle just to find the hole and then poke it with a bigger poker ..

The original terminal cups with the board and larger capacitors barely fits. The cup without the board is still a close fit. The woofer magnet is too close to the crossover. I think that is an issue. If I relocate the crossover up behind the tweeter and completely eliminate the terminal cup creating a space behind the woofer it might clean up the sloppy mids and upper bass.

That’s on another pair of my speakers but same idea. Eliminating the terminal cup and replacing with just a plate also gives you the option of much better binding posts. I like how on those posts you get a really good connection with the banana plugs.

Glad your happy with them. As far changing that one cap it isn't really worth it in my opinion it made no real difference when I did it on one of mine.

I think this speaker has the potential to sound good. The original speaker as it came from Polk leaves a lot to be desired -IMO

Many of us have changed out the binding posts in the original cups with our builds. That being said, the cabinets in most all do have deeper cabinets than the monitor 4 or have a passive in front of the crossovers.

I'm still sort of interested in knowing if you have gotten around to verifying the polarity of the drivers, especially that the tweeter is in reverse polarity to the MW. That could really mess up the sound, since Polk designed it to be that way.

The binding posts on those plates are too big to fit the original cups, too thick, they touch each other. Like 2 fat people in an airplane. That's what I mean those plates give you the option of using a much wider variety of posts.

Foam fits better with out the cup as well. All the ones I’ve seen the foam melts all the crossover and turns everything nasty. I had to scrub all that gunk off on mine with a toothbrush.

The original foam was also overly thick for these small cabinets. The new replacement foam is less thick but did cut it to the same dimensions as the original foam.

@Toolfan66 check out the crossover in mini monitor. It’s your basic Polk crossover with a few minor exceptions:

    12uf cap
    33uf (not 34) cap
    1ohm resistor
    2.7ohm resistor

Anyhow that way better than what came in the Monitor 4 originally. I would like to build something more along those lines as opposed to just recreating the original crossover on a board.

A serious question and not intended to be insulting in any way. Why invest any time, effort or money to rebuild a speaker you thought was garbage to start with? Seems an effort in futility when you could easily improve the performance of something more to your liking.
