Office Shelves for Speaker Placement
Hello everyone,
Most of us look for ear height when buying stands, buying floor standers or putting speakers on bookshelves. Well I have been messing around with my Outdoor speakers, these are brand new for my deck and before my actual bookshelf speakers get here and I drill out the holes for the speaker wire, I decided to mess around with 2 diffenent shelf heights.
Here's what's funny, Sitting in my Office chair ( waiting on my new desk to come as well ) I actually like these speakers on the higher shelf which puts the tweeter above my head.
Sitting ear height is 46 inches. For these speakers which are slightly smaller than what I purchased the tweeter on the higher shelf is at 56 inches.
If I drop them to the lower shelf , the tweeter is at 40 1/2 inches which is just slightly lower then ear height. Doesn't work for me. Now my new speakers that are on the way are slightly taller but the tweeter location is going to be very close to the same height.
The bookcases adjustable shelves are not installed, the shelves you see in the pictures are fixed so I don't have the ability to micro adjust unless I use some Isolated feet which I my.
One last thing, not having floor standing speakers in here is a blessing. So much better with bookshelf style speakers. I can't wait till me new ones arrive.

So for the speakers, I have been going back and forth with trying to find a new pair of used LSI7's , or buying a new pair of Reserve 100's which both would fit with room on my shelves in my Office. BUT I kept striking out with the LSI's and I have not heard the R100's and not to mention I'm not all that into the finishes they offer, not the color but the cheap looking quality. Someone brought up the L100's in another thread and that got me thinking BUT again the Legend L200's didn't move me.
So for years I have been thinking of moving to a Monitor Audio Solution in my Family Room Atmos system, I stumbled onto a killer pair of Focals and I started building around them as we all know how remarkable Focal is.
But in the end I went with what I love, have been checking out for years and I'll be honest , every time I install a pair, set them up and sit back and listen, I'm moved. So I decided to go Monitor Audio but Bronze instead of Silver. Silver 50 7g's where my first choice but I thought about it and since these are not main focus speakers and honestly they sound almost exactly like the Silvers especially these 50 7g models with the 6 inch driver reworked and updated and the cabinets are killer quality especially for the price.
I also like the white finish with the exposed wood around the front bezel. Check them out they will be here next week.

The Bookshelves are on a angle for experiment , I bet my wife takes one look at them and makes me put them back flat against the wall.Dan

Nope nope nope. Honestly, I don't like the sound of any speaker on a narrow bookshelf like that, angled or not. The wood usually isn't strong enough to be acoustically dead, and they are certainly not going to enhance anything. Those shelves are probably pin hung and if the backing wood/fiberboard is just nailed with tiny brads, both will buzz and vibrate like crazy. Regardless, tweeters should be close to ear height if possible. The more you change that, the less realistic the imaging will be.
All this time, when you were talking about an office setup, I thought you were planning a near-field setup. That is really where the magic is with small bookies. -

I'm planing on Isolating them when they arrive. I don't play at loud enough volumes to get any buzzing or vibrations. I'm usually around 71 db.

71dB is definitely more than loud enough to vibrate those shelving units. When I ran test tones on my 10" subwoofer at 75db to calibrate last week, I heard things vibrating all through the house at everywhere between 31-80Hz, even 20 feet away. (That was using a tripod mounted RadioShack sound meter, not just a phone app)
I guess you can experiment and maybe it won't bother you, but it wouldn't be my preferred mounting location.
Weren't you asking about speaker stands in another thread?

I get it man and thanks for pointing out your concerns. I have been in my Office listening to these Eposide 6.5 inch Outdoor speakers sitting on the shelves where the Monitor Audio 50 7g's are going to go and I'm not having any issues at all. Like I said, I plan on exploring Iso pads, maybe ones with the angled bottom to give me a slight point up. They come configurable where you have have pointed flat up or down. Something like this maybe. Not sure yet.

I also have Acoustic treatments by Vic Acoustics I may install on the side walls as they are very close.
I have these.
