It’s not very often that I feel old in this group, lol. I thought everyone about or over my age knew this…!

I will not even mention the how red with anger and actually seen my mother's hair stand on end the day she walked into the house and I was cutting coupons with her beautician shears.
    God she was mad!!

That size socket is harder to find than black paint. Does it even exist?

The other end of the 10mm socket wormhole seems to be in my garage, cause I have several that don't match any of my socket sets.

We had some workers at my last house removing the popcorn ceiling finish.
They looked a lot like this in the stairwell.

    Popcorn ceiling & Terrazo floors.

Yeah, but terrazo lasts forever, to a good approximation.

Still have a popcorn ceiling in our family room. I am a little confused as to what about them is quite so bad. Just fashion, I suppose. Never been a dedicated follower of fashion or hung out in Regent Street or Leicester Square longer than it took to queue for the cinema.

Mine is textured as well, not as much popcorn as others I've seen. My father's dislike of a smooth ceiling and my mother's dislike of the deep textured ceilings of the time lead to the one I inherited.
I do not mind it, my father liked shiny gloss ceilings, I however reprimed and painted it a flat white which greatly increased the overall much more even light reflection off the ceiling over the gloss white.

The biggest issue for popcorn ceilings is that you can't clean them easily or repaint without scraping it off. I have it in most of my upstairs rooms to this day (house built in 2001). The kitchen especially needs to be scraped off and repainted smooth due to dust/grease residue over the stove area (yes, even with a microwave vent fan above). The great room needs it too because of poor seam work by the drywallers, and of course, 24 years of dust buildup, and soot from the previous owners using the fireplace often.

Popcorn ceilings are sprayed very easily. Even if you have to use Kilz, it's pretty easy if you know what you are doing. You can even blade off (use a shield) if you have wallpaper or don't want to paint the walls at the same time. You will need to make either a custom corner blade or tape off some painters plastic to protect the corners. A typical room with a popcorn ceiling can be done rather quickly.

I sprayed a few popcorn ceilings in the early 80's. A very messy job with lots of splatter coming back in your face and that hopper got really heavy holding it up shoulder high while walking around on stilts. But the contactors loved them as they didn't need to do a nice job mudding and taping and in some cases none at all. It hid a lot of irregularities and I could never understand the dislike for them if they're done properly. If it's not flaking off and they get nasty looking just paint them with a heavy nap roller

The problem with a heavy nap roller, is (speaking of doing it wrong) many contractors will not prime the ceiling prior to applying the popcorn. As soon as the popcorn gets wet, it tends to delaminate from the sheetrock where there is no mud. While I can make a repair look like nothing ever happened, only a handful IME can actually do a repair that looks like it never happened. They usually stick out like a sore thumb and become a major eyesore.

I personally hate popcorn, with one exception. My Grandad, who lived up in Gig Harbor WA, had a pretty killer layout with no ceilings that were horizontal. All of them were vaulted and at differing angles in an open concept, multi step down level house. Whoever built his house took a glitter gun and tastefully distributed small, silver colored glitter on top of the popcorn, while the paint was still wet. It had the coolest effect with certain lighting. You could be sitting on the couch or in the DR at night and slightly move your head, and it was like thousands of stars blinking on and off. They were bright enough to where you could actually see the reflections of the light emitted from the glitter reflected off of the lid of Grandma's grand piano. That is the only popcorn ceiling I have ever seen that seriously impressed me. Wicked cool.

Mostly it was a case of poorly taped/no tape. Cracks formed up all over.
Had to be scraped to get fixed, so off it came. I think textured walls are
A bad idea as well. So much easier to fix a flat wall. In North Texas it seems
builders can't find someone who can do a flat wall. It was all about quick and
cheap. Watching illegal tradesmen work in Texas was a real eye opener.
Didn't matter how careful you were, you'd end up with contractors using them.
Up here in Tennessee it's gotten almost as bad. They sent two guys out to roof
my shed. They didn't have ladders. They stood on pallets. And they did a crappy
Job. I refused to pay them. After a couple of weeks someone came out and
Fixed it correctly. How does a business survive this operating model?

My guess is that the net profit on the jobs where the substandard work's accepted and paid for (more than) covers the occasional case that costs 'em more to do right.
Not all that different than those (at least in the de minimus days) $100 DACs from Asia. The defect rate might be, I dunno, 20%, but if only one in 10 of those who purchased duds actually follows through and demands refund or replacement, the seller is still making money in a net fashion. :#

When they do, they throw up their bad panda grapic.
