after punch cards.... it was ,8,1 that stands out for me

I'm from the punch card era (and paper tape, which probably means I should be carbon dated) - but what do you mean by 8.1?

8 data bits, one stop bit? :#
I remember FORTRAN had rules about which column to start a line of code, but I don't remember any more what that was? Maybe column 5?
Unfortunately, old also can mean forgetful. :/
PS I think I still have an RS-232 breakout box around here someplace. :|

,8,1 is from the days of Commodore 64 and 128.
In order to boot the floppy disk we had to type something like load (*),8,1 then hit return

In about 1986 I bought a Televideo 950 (dumb terminal) used for $50.00.
I paired it with a DAK 1200 baud modem and a used IBM serial printer.
I used it to access the MLS at home. Cat's pajama's!

Talk about having to learn how to use the Televideo with no manual, no internet, lots of
dip switches.... But as a determined 30 yo, I finally made it work very well.

Glad that tech era is over.

I can't say that... because in those days I understood all of that "tech"! :#

FORTRAN on a DEC pdp-8 in college. Then nothing until some work with FORTH on Sun SPARC stuff. Bleagh.
Got smart & became a sysadmin instead.
Learned just enough perl & python to be dangerous.

By the time PCs were coming into mainstream business use, I was leaving my mainframe tech roles and veering/lurching into management. Always thought my timing probably sucked as folks I knew in tech roles in the PC world always seemed to be having a whole hell of a lot more fun than I ever did on the big iron kit.

    "Basic Computer Terms (1976)"
That was almost the total content of the first computer course I took in 1980, except for the program we had to write on punch cards. I said then it was so boring that I'd never deal with computers again.
I've now been in computers professionally for 38 years. Turns out there was more to it. LOL

How many times a week do you get invitations to free dinner
to listen to a sales pitch? That happens every week now too.

Around Dallas, that is about 6 months. Whole towns pop up when you're not looking.
