Reminds me of a couple of years ago I went out to my shed in February.
In the fall I forgot to latch the top of the doors, so they weren't closed
tight. When I unlocked it and stepped in, I saw several snakes up on top
Of the sides where the roof comes down. One was HUGE. My very sharp
Brush clearing hook was hanging up on the other wall. Grabbed it and
made pretty quick work of killing them. It was cold enough they weren't
very mobile. Welcome to living next to the woods. Yes, running into snakes
    will get your heart pumping.

I have been catching snakes since I was probably 7 years old. Even got scabies from one that I caught. Got (thankfully) swiped by a baby Copperhead when I was out riding bikes while playing with the beavers at the local beaver dam.

That was when I was young and dumb. While not much has changed on that front, other than getting old? 40 years have gone by and when this happens on a moments notice? It makes time momentarily stop.

I now have a family and life isn't about BMX bikes and girls you seek to undress at any given opportunity...

So "The Beaver Dam" was the name of a local strip club?

Yep, always a surprise when they are under your feet. Ran into the 1st one yesterday.
I usually see at least 6-8 a year near or in my yard. Hate killing anything but if they are next to the house they got to go.

We don't have copperheads here. Only Western Rattlesnakes, gardener snakes and rubber boas. I don't kill them unless I absolutely have to. Just relocate them away from under the porch steps. They eat a lot of mice.

Which, by the way, is exactly what it looks like if one puts a few too many random loose resistors, capacitors, and/or chokes into a small parts cabinet drawer and opens and closes it a few times to rifle through the contents. Eventually the drawer will not even want to open any more (sort of like the kitchen drawer where one keeps the potato masher).
Do not ask me how I know this.
