L800s and Carver Amps

My Carver Silver 9t's are back today from being refurbished.

Wii they damage my L800s?

Thanks.

    Thank you for your replies.

Greg at Nelion did the work.

I had him do a pair of mine as well. Truly awesome amps…

How are you liking this combo? I hope to come across and own some Silvers someday. I was very pleased when G. Garska refurbed my TFM-45. I kind of regret selling it to a member here.

@daddyjt what model NHTs are those? I have a pair of very clean 2.3 available on FB for $199.00. I just have so many speakers I have no room for more large speakers.

Those are the flagship 3.3. I was previously running the 2.9, and had more or less given up on finding a pair of 3.3 - but then a pair came up just 3 hours away, and they are now my forever speakers. The only downside is they are quite inefficient - 86db 1w/1m. That’s where the Silver 9t amps come in - at 650 watts each after Nelion’s magic, they effortlessly drive ANYTHING - even my Kappa 9 speakers were no match for the Silver 9t pair…

The 9ts did not play well with the L800s. I'm driving my L600s with them. Sound great!

    Interesting. What happened?

When I switched on the second monoblock, right side, the right speaker emitted a loud hi pitched squeal. Thought I blew the tweeters. Same thing on the left side. Switch on the second amp: horrible sound.

MacBook Pro to Schitt Yggdrasil DAC to Schiit Freya pre to amps. The second attempt used the passive pre mode, no tubes.

That was enough for me. Back to the Parasound A21+.

INTERESTING, very interesting. Sounds like the same "ground" problem we have with the prior SDA's and why they invented the Dreadnought.

Isn't the output stage inverted on those amps?

The silver 9t are monoblocks. Were you using the SDA cable? Do the L800 require a dreadnaught for inverting or mono block amps?

I was under the impression that only differential balanced would be a problem.

Yes, I was using the SDA cable.

As far as I’ve understood, mono blocks (two completely separate amplifier chassis) have always been verboten for SDA speakers running the interconnect w/o an isolation transformer. I am not certain however, if Polk has overcome this in the new “L” series…?

There is no Dreadnought/isolation transformer for the L800, period.

That was my impression as well, but it appears an inverted output stage is too.

    Thanks guys.
I'm definitely glad I didn't try to make this combination work.

You might want to consider swapping the Silver 9’s for a set of Raven 350’s. The pairing is fantastic
