I've been changing tires and wheels ever since I was old enough to break a lug nut. I can't recall ever once using a torque wrench or seeing one used on a passenger vehicle or truck. In my later years I worked in my employer's garage where they kept and worked on their 3 modified race cars. I also can't recall even once where a torque wrench was used on those wheels either. I also never used or saw a torque wrench used on tri-axle and heavy equipment wheels either. I guess I should count my blessing that I've never lost a wheel or crossthreaded a stud. Yes I always started them by hand first when using an impact.

I ALWAYS torque mine. Had a nightmare once where I had a Firestone do my tires and shortly after got a flat late at night and couldn't get the lug nut off because the clowns had overtightened them with an air impact and no torsion bar. I had to get someone to bring some fix a flat to me and drove it the next morning and they had to remove the stud and press a new one in because they couldn't get it off either, that's how badly galled/seized it was. Since then I've always been adamant with any tire place that they have to use a torque wrench. Also, I put anti seize on my studs even though many will say that could result in the nut being tightened too much based upon normal torque spec..George / NJ

I don't normally use a torque wrench for tires either. I don't even mind the whole
Impact to tighten thing. It's the running them in cockeyed. When you have to break
them off to remove the rim, that's an issue. I've driven home with three lugs holding
On the tire a couple of times. I decided to pull all the tires off once after getting home.
All 5 on the other front tire were cross threaded. Yes, I broke off all 5. I was so mad
I'm sure the neighbors were concerned. Lots of bad language. My son had the same

As long as they don't sit there and hammer away after tight with the impact you should be fine.
Once again as long as they start them with fingers first. -
It’s crazy to me what a huge conversation this turned in to. A quick hit with an impact gun, good tightening with a hand wrench or a precise torquing - just get them good and tight. Start the threads by hand, don’t over tighten, and do the star pattern to avoid warping…“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. My granddad had a full service gas station when I was growing up. At around the age of 10, I started “working” there. My uncle showed me basically what you described above and I often put tires back on cars after fixing a flat, getting new tires, etc. I was, of course, highly supervised, but I was able to do it at 10 years old.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -
Meanwhile, in today's world...
My son is taking College level classes (he isn't even going to his regular school) and he can't find a job at 15.5 years old.
My, how the world has turned...
