I'm honestly so against paying top dollar for gas I'll never know but the sign says "full service". And there's another self service

I went into a convenient store yesterday. I normally don't buy junk food but was looking for something to munch on. I was in the candy bar area. 3.79 + tax for a candy bar. That is insane. Gas price was 2.99. I don't complain about gasoline prices..

It’s also the only way they make any money, reputedly, since margins on gas sales are “microscopic”. They aren’t particularly busy at the Shell where I fill up usually, but there are almost always a couple of cars parked in front of the store and some people inside.

What a specious article; firstly for suggesting that the gyrations of the stock market over tariff uncertainties is somehow tied to the strength of the economy and secondly for suggesting that people are driving less over fear of how tariffs will effect prices in the future. Pfft.

Gas here is going up. We were at $2.98, then $3.09 and now $3.39.

What a specious article; firstly for suggesting that the gyrations of the stock market over tariff uncertainties is somehow tied to the strength of the economy...

Wouldn’t you allow that that there is an indirect link? The forecasts for 🇺🇸 GDP in 2025-6 have been lowered from an estimated +2.3% in 2024 to +1.9% in 2025 and 1.8% in 2026.

Also, if Russia is allowed to export petroleum freely again following multiple recent signs of a rapprochement, that lowers the market price of crude oil, which inevitably lowers gas prices at the pump.

A lot is linked to perceived sentiment, which may not necessarily be a reflection of reality. Mr. Hahn has a lot of data and a lot of insight. He generally shies away from favoring any political side in particular and has been critical of both in the past.

Mostly the stock market cares about corporate profits and predictability of same, rather than the health of the economy. They crave QE, artificially low interest rates, government spending (boosts profits and GDP), and don't care about inflationary Federal Reserve policies one bit.

Aside from that, I don't want to get the thread shut down since many can't talk economics without making it political.

So true. It would be one thing if the roads were in excellent shape, thus showing the return on investment for the high fuel taxes, however that was not the case in my experience there. One could ask where the substantial sum raised from the fuel taxes goes, but I doubt you’d ever get a response even remotely associated with the truth…

Highly unlikely, as you can already find Premium Grade gasoline for under $5 in your area, although slightly above $5 is more the norm for top tier branded gas. Regular is well under $5 in your area in most major gas stations.

I filled up yesterday at our usual Shell station. Price was $5.20 for Premium Grade gasoline, but with Ralphs Rewards points (Kroger), I got $0.90 off on 19 gallons. Final price was $4.30.

Same here in Illinois. My city doubled the fuel road tax on top of the state of Illinois doubling the road tax. Unfortunately our roads are twice as bad as they were before the doubling of taxes. It's just unfathomable to be honest. With all that the state Democrats run on the fact that they have doubled these taxes and all the money they are bringing in yet NOTHING to show for it anywhere.
Now they are wanting to use the insane taxes brought in for the weed sales that we the state voted on the save the pension plans that the state for 30yrs failed to pay into and now are BILLIONS behind, now of all things they want to use it to pay for all the illegals they imported into the state by the tens of thousands.
It's beyond ridiculous!! Now it is falling on home owners property taxes to fulfill the burden of the mismanaged taxes for bailing out the pension plans, which I understand we are 3rd in the nation for the highest property taxes.

It is crazy that even Hawaii, where everything must be barged in, has lower gas prices than California - and Hawaii has better roads;-)

Trump eliminating subsidies and tax breaks for "Green Energy" projects will lower demand, which will lower prices temporarily. Until some disaster affects the cost of oil production, giving the oil industry an excuse to charge more.

Cool map. Article said NY, NJ, PA but map looks like IL not PA. My municipal prop tax went up over 7% last year which p'd me off something fierce.

Illinois is third after New York and New Jersey. The article also does mention and toss Pennsylvania in there. That is why I included it.

I know Ivan. The article was wrong was all I was pointing out. A friend of mine moved from NJ to PA partially for the (relatively) low property taxes.

Our properties were reassessed last year for 2025. My property taxes increased 40%, that’s right 40%.
And of course my property values increased the same.

Taxes are $640 per month. My first home the payments were $425 per month. Just a statement on how things have evolved the
    last 40 years.

75% of my taxes go to the Hilliard, Oh school district. The schools are excellent and very desirable but enough is enough.

I would move. We pay less than $1300.00 every year. I couldn't fathom paying that much per month.

Something doesn't smell right there. A reasessment shouldn't trigger a town or school system budget increase. Although I have heard interpreters make a lot of money.......

There was a new school levy passed in November 2024. It had been 6 years since the last one so this one was especially painful.
Then there are library, zoo and others.

Ohio does have unusually high property taxes around the major cities compared to most States because of the way schools are built and operated. Also because houses have higher valuations because of housing shortages and overall inflation. My parents used to live in Hilliard 20-30 years ago and were shocked back then at the real estate taxes increasing after the school district had to build multiple entirely new schools to accommodate the population growth. The area used to be farm fields not that long ago.

Mine is over $600 per month! The pension police and schools want A LOT MORE.

Around $780 per month here. But there is (subject to renewal by governor) an Anchor Benefit that can be as high as $1500 per year. Also, an additional senior benefit for 65 and over is supposed to start paying 50% of remainder property tax bill starting this year but not paying out until 2026. I guess this thread is about property taxes now lol.

Fuel prices are cheap compared to the other essentials like housing and food. I drive about 15k miles a year making my fuel bill about $1,700 per
year @ current prices. Heck my cable bill is nearly 3k a year. Working on getting rid of this sheet.
