Honey locusts they are not. Honey Locust do not have thorns AND are NOT a true Locust tree, we have them (Honey Locust) here everywhere.

Very interesting Rob. Personally I was going off what out city arborist had told me about our Honey Locust trees. I found this.

Compared to the native honey locust species, the Sunburst cultivar is shorter. Rather than growing to 80 or 100 ft. (24 – 30 m), the sunburst honey locust only reaches 40 ft. (12 m) in height.

There are many reasons why the ‘Suncole’ cultivar is popular in landscape gardens. Its wide spread, lack of thorns, and pod-less characteristics mean it is not a ‘messy’ tree. There are no sharp spine or pods to clear up in the fall.

All our Honey locust have no thorns, all the Black Locust trees are well armored up😉

I had planted a Purple robe locust tree. It had beautiful huge purple flower pods like huge grapes in the spring. One day it just fell over, I called our city arborist to help with it. The arborist told me "true" locust trees were very susceptible to fat head wood borers and that is what happened to mine. He then pointed to the honey locust trees my neighbor had and said those aren't true locust trees these fat head boars will never bother those trees. My locust tree had very small thorns just on the branches nothing around the base or the trunk. The neighbor's honey locust had none.
My remedy to keep the purple robe locust was to pour a Bayer insecticide around the base every spring. As long as we had the house that is what we did. We sold the house and I haven't went back to see if the tree still standing because I doubt that the people that bought the house was going to spend the money every year.

So yeah I learned something today.
