I've thought A LOT about this subject and have decided I will stay here. Probably move a bit south (NOT Florida). The Carolinas is a good option.

I have two close friends that retired to Costa Rica. Beautiful place, nice weather, but there's a lot of things they miss from the U.S. One thing you have here that is not available in many of these countries is the 2nd amendment "tools". Crime is going up everywhere and being able to defend yourself becomes important.

I doubt that. When in comes to healthcare, many determine the costs as a measurement of better. Nobody takes into consideration the quality of care, or the accessability to specialists. In my opinion, other countries do better than us in experimental medicines and operations. Often at the forefront of new discoveries because they have more leway to experiment.

I myself am alive today, only because of a foreign experimental program that I was able to get into that saved my life. However, finding the doctors who had the talent to perform such an operation was few even in a major metro area like Chicago. I can't image the scarcity in the latin American countries.

You need to face some facts as we get older. Emergency care is vital. Living just 40 minutes outside a major Hospital can be the difference of life and death. Living in an area that has the tools and knowlege to fix complicated issues is also vital.

Our standards are also much higher as far as medical facilities goes. Much of the 3rd world countries have limited standards . Especially in the free healthcare nations where the facilities are not as clean as they should be, waiting in line for hours, few diagnosis machinery available.

So, yeah, you can live out in the middle of nowhere, away from people, but your also away from quick emergency services that as you get older, your life may depend on. Just food for thought. One may also want to consider, if wanting to live outside the USA, even if just 6 months out of the year. Your American health insurance does not cover you outside the U.S. If your not a citizen of some of these latin American countries, their free healthcare won't apply to you either. Bring lots of cash. Same if your on a cruise, something happens to you, better have access to cash. My father inlaw learned that the hard way after an episode on a cruiseship. They wanted to dump him in a carribean country. After they talked to the Cleveland clinic here to stabilize him, he then had to cough up 10k cash for services rendered or he couldn't leave the ship.
