More like the AR-MST (which were, in essence, baby AR-LSTs:

    Or the EPI M-601/M-602:

    heh, or the Allison Four:

    so...
Are these LSIm -702fx thingies useable as "mains" (i.e., for 2-channel) or are they only good for surround use?

If a person already has a pair of LSi-FX would 702’s be advisable?

That is, would the 702’s be a worthy step up from the LSi-FX at $299/pair with free shipping?

I would call them a sideways step depending on the rest of the speakers in the system. The LSiFX are excellent surround speakers that would still fit into an LSiM system for surround use sound wise but not perfectly. The designs are really quite different. If all the other speakers are LSiM I would jump on the LSiM 702s at the price they are at. Note the size differences between them though. The LSiM 702s are quite big (wide) even compared to the LSiFXs. But, the LSiM 702s stand out less from the wall because they are bottom ported.

I see from the manual the placement for a 5.1 setup recommends sides versus rear. Although in 7.1 has placement in the rear for the 702's. I purchased these based on the price but might not have the proper placement for them. How off would these be if replacing two Fxi A4's on stands in Bipole mode behind the main listening position? Ultimately might sell them but the price was too low to pass up.

@Emlyn made some great points. I agree that if one were to run a full LSiM setup then it would be cool to have the 702's.

Myself, I've used the Polk f/x 500i and f/x 1000 and found both to be awesome for surround duty. The LSi-FX would be really hard to top for those needing a dipole/bipole speaker. The 702's might be better for discrete channel object based sound used in Dolby ATMOS systems for example. Dipole/bipole speaker ARE NOT recommended.

I love the split cylinder shape of the 702's for surrounds and for years have strongly considered getting them. However, my couch sits right at the rear wall and the left side of the room is open to the kitchen. So, side surrounds are not an option and IMO dipoles work better at diffusing the effects. With the 702's being direct firing, I'm not sure how well they would work over the split cylinder shaped Artison Portrait LRS that I already have on the back wall. Also, they are almost twice as large and almost three times as heavy! At the given price, its now or never to get a set but I talked myself out of them again.

    702 f/x
    19-15/16 W x 16-1/4" H x 6-3/4" D
    28.9 lbs

    Artison Portrait LRS Surrounds.
    9-3/8" W x 9" H x 4-1/16" D
    10 lbs.

The Artison's are pretty cool play fairly well and clean beyond their small size yet produce a well defused sound. They have Kevlar drivers, Vifa tweeters and the design was headed by Cary Christie formerly of early Infinity Systems, Inc and Acoustic Research fame. They are dipole from about 3k Hz only.

Dolby recommends a Dipole speaker (FXi A4) for the side and a direct firing (702's) for the rear. However, some use diople or bipole for a 7.1 setup for other formats. Then, there are the modern object based formats like ATMOS that recommend direct firing speakers closer in height to ear level. One has to find what works and sound best in their own space.

I do think that Dolby recommends direct radiating speakers for heights, but ya know what they say: trust yer ears and all that...

It's not sold by Amazon though but CAPITOL HOME THEATER. Don't think they are an authorized reseller so YMMV

I got a pair from Crutchfield even though I don't need them right now. Next time I move I may go back to a 7.1 system with the 702s as side surrounds. Their return policy is the best in the business if needed. :)

I am having trouble with set up of four new 702’s. My HT room is 12’ wide by 30’ long. So I cannot mount on back wall. Too far away
Instructions call for mounting like B or only use two and go with C. They are directional so hence the arrows. I would like to go A.
As always. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Peace. Dxtm0bhf0j9bu.jpeg
