I went to the mail box yesterday afternoon , and when I came into the house I took off my hat, and to my surprise I find this butterfly resting on the bill of it, took me by surprise obviously, it was amazing to see, I took it back outside and got it to crawl on some off our flowers..

    Beautiful!!!!

I watch a ton of nature shows like planet earth and am always fascinated by nature and some of the random facts. If I am not mistaken that is a swallowtail butterfly - which has a life span of only two weeks!!!! Not to get sappy or sound corny, but it’s a shame that something that pretty only lives for a couple weeks.

Ain't that the truth. Saw more Monarchs around here last year. I spoke to the township mower operator about not cutting down the milkweed on the side of this Berm that I ride my mountain bike on.

    Dag man, that thing's huge!
Pretty cool how it just landed on the bill of your hat.

I'm sure you are all correct about it being a tiger yellowtail.
Looking at Larry's pics, though, they all show the butterfly at rest in a wings open position.
I always thought wings open meant moth, wings closed meant butterfly.

I could be wrong (as if ! ).

In any event...... Nice hat. :)

It piggybacked into your home unannounced.
Be glad it wasn't a murder hornet.

It’s wings were closed when I took my hat off, it opened them before I could get my phone out of my pocket..

I'll be sure to show my son. He is an insect lover. He just turned 9 on Tuesday he received an explorer hat and vest, a snake hook, a praying mantis egg sack, a turtle snow globe, coyote Peterson book and a gopro like camera. Monday he wanted to go find an Eastern tent moth nest. We went on a bike ride and found a good sized one. We brought it home. He found a bin and put it in there and covered it with a towel. He wanted to bring it up in his room and I said no way. Next morning we are about to leave to go do a family turtle walk as a bday activity the garage was covered in caterpillars. We picked most up and put them back in his bin. We get back from the walk as I am pulling into the garage I see more everywhere. Out we get and pick them up and told him he can keep them in his play structure house. We've had monarchs, painted ladies, swallow tails flying around the house. He always let's them go after a day of looking at them. Heck one of the neighborhood kids rang our doorbell the other day to get my son to come rescue a dragonfly that had landed in their kiddy pool. My son grabbed his net and off he went. I just had to remind him to keep some distance from the the other kids. He'll really enjoy the picture you took thank you. 6rzcai6xxpv3.jpg

Butterflies often do rest with their wings folded, but it's not a rule--look at its antennae--butterflies have smooth "filament" antennae; moths have feathery antennae. 9snc240l7i8v.png

I saw this one 4-1/2 yrs ago and got this shot. May be a Painted Lady, American Lady, or West Coast Lady. Not sure.

Nice catch! I was aware of Eastern/Western Tigers, but not the Two-tailed. Very cool. I spent a couple summers with my dad (a biology teacher and general outdoorsy guy) chasing, catching, and mounting butterflies for our collection. Great memories for me and I learned a lot then--still remember much of it!
